We're having a meeting about the United Way today at work. I kinnda don't want to donate money from my check, each week. Its like their CEO makes 503,000 a year and I make 20,000. I mean I know its only like $5 each check but next semester when I'm looking for $ for books, where will the united way be then?

They received 62 million dollars in donations last year, idk if my $60 will make a difference for them, as much as it will for me.

Some businesses put enormous pressure on employees to donate to make 100% so they look good. Some have departmental contests to apply more pressure. The cop out that is easiest is "I gave to United Way in my own name". If you are like me you add "and I don't want to give $260 (if paid weekly) in the company's name." In one case, I signed up for $1 a week and canceled it a month later.

No you are not a bad person, sometimes time you spend on something is just as good as if you spent money. Times $5.00 a check and your right you will have less money for books. The day you can afford to donate you will.

Giving to charity does not have to mean giving your money away, especially when you are strapped for cash.
If you feel like you want to help you can give of yourself (volunteer) so don't feel guilty for making the responsible choice of investing in your own future.
Keep your money for next semester.

Not sure whose pocket is the United Way and who benefits.

If it is a charity just give what you want or not. No reason why you can't give a one off payment instead of a regular monthly one if it is going to a good cause.

no..and if you really feel guilty there are other ways you can help the less fortunate...when i didnt have money to donate..i organized a drive for items for our local shelter....know what was better than sticking money in a jar??? this little girl at the shelter said thank you and gave me a hug as i was about to leave after dropping off the stuff we collected :)

Nope, UW is a big racket. Many companies strongarm their employees to give because they get good PR out of the deal; however ,UW support all sorts of efforts that are unsavory and only a small percentage of your donation actually makes it to the charities.
Buck the trend and just say NO!

get waiting to be hassled. those human beings play problematic ball. and that they play grimy. i've got heard of folk having to sue their boss to get them to end harassing them over the United way donations. of course then they are going to be searching for any reason to do away with that individual. yet carry your floor. they won't be able to stress you to furnish to any charity in case you do no longer choose to.

Of course not and it isn,t mandatory either.Almost every one has their own charities they give to on their own. When you can afford it ,give to the charity of your own choice. You could also volunteer your time to an organization that needs your help instead if you can,t afford to donate money.

No, you must take care of yourself first. But if one day you have enough, donate to a charity of your choice, it would be good for you and for others.

No, you can donate to whatever charity you like. I don't really donate to them anymore either.
