Here in Europe it simply means you are going for a swim, but I've heard that in the US the term is immediately associated to homosexuality or somebody wanting to show off his pack. Is it true? I need to know for a translation I'm doing, as if I'm not more specific the full meaning will be lost and I shall burn in translators' hell for eternity.

I think that unless you are competing in a swim event or triathlon, speedos are generally viewed as unacceptable.

Personally, I don't view speedos are something gay, but as something out of place. Unless you are a professional swimmer and are practicing in the pool, you should not wear it if you don't want to get the "WTF" reaction from people around you.
I have asked my friends what they thought of speedos just now so that I can complete an answer for you and none of them said gay; they just said it's just not very accepted around here. So it might be culturally acceptable in Europe, but not so much here. Try shorts or longer swim suits :)

Wearing a speedo doesn't make you gay,just immature homophobics assume it if they see someone wearing one.
I however,think speedos are not exactly *ahem* attractive.But wearing a speedo in a swim event is acceptable.

Generally only competitive swimmers wear speedos in America, or really fat middle-aged guys who think that showing their bulge will somehow distract others from seeing their massive pot-bellies. ;)
I'm curious about the context of a translation that would require this, though. It's not really "gay," just not worn by most men - straight or gay - unless they're competitive athletes.

I must be in the minority. I love them - I think they look good and yes they do show off the goods but that is my business and I enjoy the stares and compliments. I did not work this hard on my body to be shy.
