Being afraid of not waking up after surgery is pretty common. I had the same misgivings when I had my sinuses operated on.
I don't have the statistics at hand, but the the percentages are *way* low, particularly for surgery on things that don't involve the head and chest. Sure, it happens, but not very often.
As for pain medication, it's hard to beat vicodin

A fifty pound sledgehammer would work! The only problem is you had better call the ambulance first and wait until you hear the siren before you do it. Also alert the hospital to make sure there's a hand surgeon on call who isn't out watching a movie. Check the movie theaters to find out when the movies are over. I don't think the hand surgeon is going to check out the movie theater because some idiot decided to smash his wrist after he paid for popcorn and a drink.

I think Motrin is good, but check it to make sure.
I broke my wrist b4, so I know what it's like. :)
How long did it take you to type this question??? :):)
I don't know what the percentage of not waking up from surger is, but it would be pretty low, almost not there, or else they wouldn't put you to sleep just for wrist surgery. I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled out and I have to be put to sleep, and I scared out of my mind of having that done to me.
Hope your wrist gets better soon!!!

DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL WITH ANY PAIN MEDS. OR ANESTHESIA. They would not do the surgery.
I have had 9 surgeries and have had great sleep and woke up every time.
In the last few years my Husband has had 6 surgeries and has waken every time.
Doctors do not like Malpractice suits, so they will take the best care of you possible. It is their job.
Think about getting your wrist fixed and getting on with your life.

I would make sure you find a good surgeon-I know of several in Dallas, Texas but don't know where you live. It is very rare to not wake up after surgery. I have worked for 22 different doctors/surgeons and it never happened to any of their patients. Also anesthesia complications are more likely to occur in people who already have severe health problems. Good Luck!!

Hey there,
No worries.
You are gonna wake up, that won't be a problem.
If gone under surgery too, and look at me! I also woke up!
It is not like it is a heavy thing for your body,
It's not so serious that you could die when you are 'asleep'.
I'm sure everything will be fine.
Do what's the best for your wrist!
;) good luck, and no worries okay?

The doctor who examined you in the ER should have prescribed pain medication for you! Don't worry about 'waking up' -- one of our best friends is an anesthesiologist, and they are fully licensed physicians who are very competent. He will check you out before he puts you under, and WON'T put you under if there's any risk of you not waking back up!

It's not like your having open heart surgery. Your just having surgery on your wrist. Get it done and get over it.

There are thousands of surgeries done each day. The chances of not wakeing up are very slim.

If you can get a presciption for it tylenol w/codeine is great. A lot of people like Aleve for over the counter meds but I haven't had good luck there.
