Area is length multiplied by breadth.

You have Area = 308 ft^2
And know that L = B +8

Therefore
A = (B+8)*B
A = B^2 + 8B
308 = B^2 + 8B
Thus,
0 = B^2 + 8B - 308

Then use the quadratic formula to solve for values of B. It will only be the positive value that is relevant, since a negative width is illogical!

rectangle:
let width=x,then length=x+8
Area=x(x+8)=308
x^2+8x-308=0
(x-14)(x+22)=0
x=14,-22
rejecting the negative answer, we get x=14ft=width of rectangle. length=22ft.

L = W + 8
LW = 308

(W + 8)W = 308
W^2 + 8W - 308 = 0

W is 14 or -22. Discard the negative root.

L is then 22.

Assume shape is rectangle.
L (L - 8) = 308
L² - 8L = 308
L - 8L - 308 = 0
L = [8 ± √1296 ] / 2
L = [ 8 ± 36 ] / 2
L = 22 is acceptable
W = 14
Length = 22 ft
Width = 14 ft
