a ball joint splitter

Balljoint splitter/remover. There are different types available, one is like a tapered 2 pronged fork that you drive between the joint and the bearing carrier/suspension arm. Use this type only when you are replacing the joint as the rubber boot will be damaged. In another type you grip the joint with the tool and a bolt on the tool is wound down on the centre of the joint thus pressing it out of the carrier or arm. Personally i rarely use a splitter, a long heavy duty lever pushing down on the suspension arm and a few good blows with a hammer will free the joint.
