Yes, they did but they took it one step further...don't make enemies period!
The saying goes, "keep your friends close but your enemies closer" is a very accurate one that all should keep near and dear to their hearts.

Nope. They taught me that you will always have some enemies at work because the world is full of envious people who will hate me because I'm more intelligent, talented or skilled than they are.
They taught me not to talk too much or say too much when I do talk because you might think they're your friend then, come promotion time, they'll stab you in the back to beat you out.
They taught me that if I work hard and always honest, the boss will appreciate that more than the brown-nosing come promotion time or time for raises. On that part, they were wrong. Brown-nosing gets some people just as far or farther than hard work. At least it did on one job that I had.

Anon, my parents taught me to work, picking Cotton in the old hot sun 12 hours a day! We were all friends out there, sometimes our boss would bring ice cold soda pop in a galvanized wash tub, in the Fields! You have a good evening! Jimmy.

Yes, but sometimes people will hate you for no reason. It is often out of your hands whether you will have enemies.

Nope, they didn't: they told me go to work, do your work, but don't be afraid of your work ......... the best advice in the world!
If your doing your work, then no one has cause for complaint. Some still complain, but they have no evidence to back it up .... cuz you have done all that you should have done. There are soooooo many troublemakers out there in the workforce. But they can't touch you, if your doing your work.

That was a subset of the idea of not burning bridge when you left a job. Fortunately for me, I work for myself.
