They speak so you can't hear them, in some undetectable language, and then say they are sick of repeating themselves, coz we get annoyed when we can't hear them.!

Male muttering is actually medical condition known as "sottovocalismo." Paleo-evolutionists theorize that sottovocalism served to reinforce social cohesion in small group societies be allowing the expression of dissent without forcing the dissenting person to identify himself.

Ex. He-Who-is-Good-at-Finding-Meat (HWGFM) thinks that the group leader, He-Who-Wields-Large and Sharp Club-and-Who-is-Not-Afraid-to-use-It ((HWWLSCWNA)), is way off base in proposing that the group invade the territory belonging to The-People-Who-Have-Learned-to-Use-Sticks-and-String-to-Make-sharpened-Sticks-fly-into-Flesh. Rather than stick his neck out by openly opposing HWWLSCWNA, Mr. HWGFM can mutter his opposition. This allows for the idea to circulate among other potential allies, but also allows HWGFM to respond to HWWLSCWNA's "Who said that?" with a reasonably credible "I don't know." Due to the fact that those who could not or would not mutter where often killed for their efforts, the gene pool now favors the tendency toward muttering.

Further, it terms of reproductive success, sottovocalism enhances the male's eventual access to vagina. It has been documented that if a male directly complains or renders criticism in a clear and distinct voice, no matter how justified the complaint is or how beneficial the criticism is to the female, the female gene for "auricular-particularism" (or hearing that which is desired to be heard) will serve to interpret those words in the manner least beneficial to the male.

Ex2. Male states boldly - "Honey, I've asked you not to mess with the equalizer on my entertainment center." Female hears: "I don't respect you - you are a stupid, B. My toys are more important than you are" The Male will not have a chance to practice reproducing with her vagina for several days.

Ex3. Male mutters "Why does she always f**ck with my Sh**? I can't f***king stand it!" Female says, "What? I couldn't hear you!" Male says, "Nothing, Honey." Male now has a chance to access the vagina.

Recent cognitive psychology theorists argue against the notion that men mutter, postulating rather that the female of our species ahs the ability to selectively filter the vocalisms of the male species. What this means is that, while males are actually speaking quite clearly the females' brains are actually rendering the words unintelligable on pupose. Theorists of this bend state that this gives woman an advantage by allowing them to hear what the want to hear and giving them plausible deniability.

I hope this helps.

Try this: Repeat back to them some absolutely ridiculous statement and ask, is that what you said, or I am so happy that it is fine with you to completely redecorate the house, buy a new diamond ring, or similar, you get the idea. You will notice a remarkable improvement in his diction. Just keep doing it, don't give up!

hmmm - yeah, not only men though. My 16 yr old speaks at a volume so low & quiet even the dog has to strain to hear, then she gets all huffy cos I ask her to repeat what she said!

Must be a genetic thing - men mutter cos then they won't get into trouble (they hope anyway)

Yes, and woe to someone that does have a hearing problem on top of that! If anyone wants to mumble, they don't deserve your recognition or an answer. Pretend you didn't hear a thing, and have them initiate the conversation further. If they get mad, just tell them "if you're going to mumble, I'm not going to acknowlege you."

You know that's a really interesting question I think it's a way of getting out how they feel without causing a scene. Just for the same reason that women tend to give me the silent treatment when they're not happy!!

Glad to help,
Thank you!!

Yeah sure Cleo. Who you kidding? You guys have hearing so sensitive that you make sonar look obsolete.

I've yet to meet any woman who like men has selective hearing. I've played this game with my wife for years. Her hearing is so acute she can hear a gnat fart.

I don't know! Ever ask a man a question and knowing they don't talk loud enough you watch for their lips move and when they don't you ask again, only to get yelled at because they said they answered you already?

Just the opposite here...my wife is always saying things so softly and sometimes talking to herself, I cannot hear.

Same reason women do! They are mad or frustrated about somethings and they don't want to say it to the other but they want to say it out loud! We all do it and I believe women do it more than men!
