I just wash on a hot cycle a few times, but if you get it wrong they may shrink.
An old trick that people used to do is to wear them in the bath, makes them fit better and they aren't so stiff.

Wear them frequently. Don't be afraid to get them dirty.

In order to preserve the hue of your jeans hold out as long as you can before washing. A washer and dryer will soften, fade, and shrink the denim. If they begin to smell, put fabric softener sheets in the pockets at night.

When you clean them don't use the washing machine. Soak your jeans in a tub of cold water for 30 minutes. If you put a small amount of white vinegar in the water it will prevent fading. Then put your jeans on and let them dry, shrink dry to fit your body. If you don't want to do this then let them air dry, just don't put them in the dryer.

Buy then a little bit tight because denim naturally expands and they will wear better the slimmer they are.

Walk in the rain with them on or swim in the ocean. Wear them until they are dry. Then wash repeatedly. The "relax" comes with wear and washing. Unless you want to wash them with bleach to break down the fibers faster. (Fill washer with water, soap, and bleach, aggitate, then add jeans.)

I always go with plenty of fabric softener. I tend to wash them in cold water to avoid shrinkage.

Give jeans two good washes and then give them two extra rinses.
