Yes, that's why I don't gossip. I try not to say anything bad about someone unless I'm going to say it to their face.

Not if you choose your audience wisely. I never think badly of people who like to spread gossip about people that I don't like, I just get upset when they're gossiping about someone I like. Then I have to stand up and defend my friend.
But my enemies? Go right ahead! Dish!
The trick is not WHAT you say but WHO you say it to... and maybe HOW you phrase it. I believed that only small people talk about other people then I started a singles group and realized that I needed "the inside information" that sometimes you only get through gossip. Thank God for gossip or I could have made a terrible mistake in my love life!
So, generally, I'd agree that gossiping is bad but there is a time and place for it. Wasn't it Alice Roosevelt that said "If you have nothing good to say about anybody, come sit by me!"?

Yes and No but I am not sure I agree totally with what you are saying because I have been smeared by gossip just as much as any gossip I have done towards another

I think those who spread gossip are so deluded that they would never believe that. In my last job, there were these group of girls who gossiped and sniped about everyone. It made their day to put other women in the office down about their clothes, their hair, their lack of style. They would never be able to fathom that it made them look bad to smear other people and try to make themselves look better by putting others down. They were selfish, self-centered and just plain mean. When I told them off about it, they were completely clueless and most telling, remorseless. They just couldn't see it.

Yes, I am well aware of that little fact. I share this bit of information with my teenage children, all six of them, so that they may be spared the relentless torture of the aftermath of gossip. What I have found, however, is that is seems to be a rite of passage for teenage girls. They always seem to be in the thick of it all when it comes to the gossip of high school. Maybe as adults they will grow out of that need.

Usually the gossipers are the ones that are hiding stuff about themselves. They smear people to make themselves look better. I have an ex-sister-in-law that gossips about everybody. And she's usually wrong about her facts. Get a life Charla!!!

Yes, I did know that, which is why I generally refrain from gossiping.

Yup. Knew that. I still can't help it upon occasion, though. It is the nature of the human being to do that.
