I'm an actress but things have been in a standstill lately. I want to make a living doing what I love. Nothing wrong with that. AFTRA is the only union you can just pay to join no credits needed. Should I do it? I want to do principal roles but I'll do background too of course till then. Will it help jump start my career. I heard some casting directers dont take that union seriously b/c anyone can join is that true? Actors help!

I probably wouldn't. However, as an AGMA member, I can join Actor's Equity, SAG and several others by just paying the fee. I doubt you can do that as a member of AFTRA, but you might want to find out. But, you are still going to want the resume you need to get the attention you want. Just being a member of a union may not be enough especially if you live in NY, LA. And don't get me started on Chicago.

I used to recommend it but have quit. aftra covers daytime tv that is videotaped rather than filmed as series are in primetime. Wait till you get a job to join the union it is a big expense.
I mentor actors in their quest for a career and I do it for free, read my profile and write me at my aol address and I will be happy to help you get your career out of the doldrums, be sure to tell me your age and your background.

No need to pay all that money unless you have to (by getting a role that says you must join the union). The only real benefit is to become SAGe after one year but that's a lot of money to throw at them when you could earn it by getting real roles. You could also become SAGe with union extra roles. Check out SAG.org for that info.

good luck!
