There are times, it seems, people get offended when someone speaks the truth. And the speaker is castigated and sometimes fired. Which is more important, the truth or people's right to not be offended?

This is a very difficult topic.

Should the truth be suppressed sometimes? Yes. For instance, I may think you are ugly and I have a right to say so, I think, but never would. That is unless you asked me point blank for my opinion.

But, are there other opinions one should keep to oneself? I think so. Then again, some opinions might lead the speaker to speak the truth, though the person could be wrong. Again, a for instance. Someone could say, "in my opinion, people who don't support the troops are traitors". That would be a true statement, because that is indeed his opinion. But his opinion may not be correct.

So what do we do? I am in favor of forums for people to speak their minds. The example from above of the college president who got axed for his opinion on men versus women is a prime case. Women got offended, he got the boot, and now scientists are backing him.

We have to let people speak the truth as they see it, from Ward Churchill to Ward Connerly. We need to discuss things. You can't discuss if you lose your job for being unpopular. As long as you aren't calling for insurrection or shouting "fire" in a crowded theater, let people speak what they view as the truth.

Hello,
political correctness always lead to suppression of truth. But man is a liar, more or less and political correctness is a excuse.

No but religious authoritarianism leads to truth suppression. Take the recent "no homosexuals" claim by the Iranian President for example or any of the dozens of x-tain websites the promote lies in order to propagate their religion.

to answer your question...yes.

I personally believe the truth to be more important and people can learn not to be offended at every little thing.

Otherwise, we're headed for the PC world of Soviet Russia, where people who didn't agree with the propaganda of the day, they were found to be mentally ill and placed in institutions and heavily drugged...taken to an extreme, I could see the rabid left doing that to others who disagree with them on many topics...such as 'global warming'

Sometimes absolute truth is offensive.

It's interesting how we've gotten to the point in society where we sacrifice truth and what's right because what might be said is uncomfortable.

It's more than time that we act like adults and stop hiding behind this childishness.

There is so much corruption and so many shady behind closed doors deals going on in our government and with the moguls of this country that it would take years just address it all much less end it!!

Where to begin?
Example: Gonzales said that he went to Ashcroft for Ashcroft's approval of this warrantless wiretapping program, even in light of the fact that Ashcroft was recovering from very painful Pancreatitis and under sedation, and despite the fact that Ashcroft had already previously abdicated his authority to Comey because of this health development.

So Gonzales' arguement for why he did this was that there was no law saying that Ashcroft couldn't, at that time, for the specific reason of granting approval for this program, in the minutes that that would take, Ashcroft could take back the power of his authority and then relinquish it again back to Comey!!!!!!!

Did I explain this clearly?? Gonzales wanted him to re-assume his authority for the minute or two it would require for Ashcroft to be able to give his approval to then re-abdicate back to Comey!!!!

The UNBELIEVABLE AUDACITY of these deluded individuals is astounding! Their shamelessness knows no boundaries!!

This is but one example of the plethora of corrupt behavior that abounds in our system! Truth is going to be twisted and torn to shreds by those who benefit from the truth remaining hidden!

I am more offended by those who subvert truth rather than by the embarrassment it might cause our society!

Yes.........just like it breeds hypocrisy!
Look at Tom Delay for example;
He was all for keeping a vegetative woman alive with a feeding tube in her stomach...........Yet when his father was on life support it was alright to turn off the respirator!

Sometimes it can, as with feminists in the 2005 firing of a man who spoke of a male's aptutude for math and science.

"religous correctness" on the right can create the same type of friction, i.e. "how DARE you talk about MY god like that?!"

You are right. If it doesnt suppress the truth, it certainly dilutes it.

No, calling someone names and insults has nothing to do with telling the truth.
