McCoy had Spock's katra. Why was retrieving his body necessary. They didn't know when they set out that Spock was actually alive. This has bugged me (never lost sleep over it, though) since I saw the film in 1984.

Tue but a distress call came from Kirk's son on the way to Vulcan so they had to stop there and coincidentally found Spock alive. Remember Mc Coy was going insane with Spock inside him.

Kirk's son (Dr. Marcus) & Lt. Saavik are on Genesis doing tests when they detect a lifeform which turns out to be a small boy they 'believe' could possibly be Spock, since Genisis is 'life from lifelessness'. McCoy had Spock's katra but in order to 'free them both' they needed a body for Spock's katra to go in besides McCoy, so they could have the old McCoy back. What better body than Spock's himself? When they hear of the lifeform of a small boy on Genesis ADDED with the fact that McCoy is having visions telling him to go to Genesis, they take the chance at the thought it 'could in theory' be Spock's body on Genisis. Lucky for them, it was...lol :)

To remove Mr. Spock's katra from Dr. McCoy's mind and insert it back in Mr. Spock body; that way they will end with a full Mr. Spock again and also to cure Dr. McCoy of his madness.

When they released Mr. Spock's body inside the torpedo' towards the Genesis, the body was dead; it was a funeral worthy of a spaceship captain. The body revived due to the effect of the "Genesis proyect". They did not knew at that time anything about the katra.

Spock's katra was in McCoy and Sarek has a scene with Kirk about cremating Spock and not bringing his body back to Vulcan. Anyway they go back there because Saavik and Peter are there doing research and find a life form and the Klingon's arrive there.
