Same as it is today, a means of displaying some information in multiple media, for example, pictures + sound = multimedia.

Future, same as we have, but getting more technologically advanced . . . we will not grow extra senses

i was watch this show on tv and they said that there are companys out there doing experiments useing crysals and holograms to store information. and it can hold a Uber amount of information b/c of the 3 dimentional proporties.
