Some DSL ISPs give away USB modems for older PCs. They won't work on your mac.

Make sure you get an Ethernet router.

USB was never meant for Internet connections, but it's cheaper and more available on old PCs without Ethernet. It also requires additional software from the ISP.

USB is for other things, like keyboards, mice, disks, scanners, printers...

if you want to connect to a classic dial up modem, you must use USB!

I'm using a Mac, and I use USB cords for a printer, a digital camera (etc.) memory card reader, and a device for connecting a guitar to a computer called a "Line 6 Guitar Port". Whoever is telling you that you can't do that is wrong. I am using the latest version of the Mac OS X software, too.

However, what you should use depends on what you are going to do - for video or multi-track audio you might want to be sure use the USB 2.0 or "Firewire" because you will need the faster data transfer rates in order to prevent problems. You may need to do other things to upgrade your computer as well depending on what you are trying to do.

p.s. For high-speed/broadband internet, then you should use the ethernet cord - it works differently than a USB cord (and won't fit the right input).
