Hi,

I've had a stammer since i was little & it got worse when i wasn't interacting as much with people, my speech isn't physical, it's mental. I can talk with friends/family, alone, read, in front of groups, on camera & in front of female's so i definitely know there's something not right in my head or maybe just my thinking.

Would it help if i spoke about how i feel? Family says i should but i can't see how talking about stuff will help me, i know it's the mental side that's causing it but it's a mix of that & confidence. Who should i be speaking too? My therapist said someone who deals with Cognitive behavior.

I've tried a £3,500 fluency device which didn't help at all, i've tried the cheaper version, to same effect & i'v tried a £400 course (The Starfish Project) which worked well & is very intesne but i couldn't keep it up as old habbits crept in.

Thanks in advance, appreciate & will read all comments.

I think the therapist will help, but you can do so much on your own.
I think most stutterers thoughts fly faster than their mouths can keep up. It means you must be very smart!
One thing you can do, with or without a therapist, is simply slow down and not try to talk as fast as your thoughts. Make others around you wait until you are finished speaking, and practice taking your time to pronounce each word.
It's something I myself have to do...

greater confidence = less anxiety = less stammering.. though you will likely never completely dominate it by this time in your life... but yes, counseling and speech therapy from a professional can help you lessen your stammering.
