Every morning, I am the first to wake up and take a shower. Some mornings I have hot water, other mornings I have lukewarm water in which to begin my day. Could it be the water heater or our pipes? Any ideas?

Check the settings, then check the floor area around it to see if it has a leak...Most likely its the heating sensor, its probably malfunctioning, it could be costing u a lil extra as well... cause its tryin to heat it to a temp but the temp isn't rising, but the heater is still drawin the electricity..You should get it checked...

Well, if you have an electric water heater, one of the heating elements could be burned out. This happened to my husband and me a few years ago, and found out the bottom element in the water heater had died. My husband also found a lot of calcium build-up in the tank. Once the element was replaced we had plenty of hot water. It is no fun to try to take a shower and not have the hot water you want.

Probably the water heater. I am guessing it is electric and has two heating elemnts. One is for the initial heating and one for maintaing the heat. The one for maintaining is probably defective. May just be covered with calcium deposits and is not "sensing" the need to operate.

Get another water heater and get your pipes flushed.
