Ok… Has anyone else been thinking that California should break away from the union like me? I’m saying we have a ruthless dictator running this country and trying to dictate how we should live our personal lives. It also appears that most of the union dumps on California and hates us don’t they see that California’s money is helping them out. They Say that the Californian Economy is 8th in the world, So we’re pretty much a self reliant state. A few days ago Governor Schwarzenegger spoke at the UN sounding like a leader of a Progressive Country and the first thing that came to mind is California should break away, I think that California as a whole would be much better off. So my question to you is if it were come down to a vote on whether California should become it’s own Republic, would you vote to stay or breakaway.

No way! We don't want Texas... That could stay in the Union with the rest of the welfare states.

Well, I would not call the President a Ruthless Dictator; He’s more of a babbling incoherent buffoon and a war monger. I live here in California and current Government is all about our business, Wire tap, the Marijuana Issue, Stem Cell Research issue and wondering who we sleep with it’s all there business. Besides it always appears that the rest of the country chooses the president and that California has to go along with the ride regardless of the repercussion. It appears that this country al a whole is losing it’s luster with a Currency plummeting to new low almost at a daily basis. I know I’m totally for breaking away, Breaking away would not mean that Mexico would come knocking at the door (sounds like some of you have drank from the Republican Punch “Fear mongering” punch). Sure water would be a problem but there are alternative ways of getting water. Energy again alternatives, Wind Farms and well as placing wind farms in the Pacific. BTW Without the California money making machine how would the President fund this war? We're all ready in debt up to our ears. The Break away would possibly hurt both parties.
Joe C. ok you don't have to watch Movies from Hollywood... Good Luck with those Baliwood Flicks (oooo Exciting)

As a Californian, I often think about the fact that our state, if it was its own country, would have the 8th largest economy in the world. We're often ahead of the curve as far as environmental laws and progressive policies, and the fact that we get less money back from the Federal Government than we pay in has always irked me. The same red states who love to criticize California are subsidized by the tax dollars on our wealth. Talk about hypocrisy.
However, leaving the US would be a bad move, not only for us but for the rest of the states, and would probably trigger similar moves from other states, changing the face of the US economy and its politics forever.
Suddenly, California would have hundreds and hundreds more miles of border to defend.. there would also be the issue of the dozens of US military bases scattered around the state, especially in the desert. US companies based in California would have to pick whether they wanted to become California companies or move out of our "country" to stay within US jurisdiction... Our laws could drastically change with only the CA supreme court as the final word.... Citizenship status of people living here... Logistically, it would just cause so much trouble, it wouldn't be worth it in the long run.
I love being a Californian, but I also love being an American.

California is the 8th largest economy in the world and the only US state that could be self sufficient however that is no reason to break away from the rest of the country. I would vote no.

I live here too. Yes, our economy is huge, but I wouldn't go as far as self-sufficient. It hasn't been a decade since the State was paying it's employees in "vouchers", and we still don't generate enough power to fill our needs- remember the rolling black outs?
If California decided to attempt to break up the United States of America, I'd fight against California.

I disagree with President Bush being described as a "ruthless dictator", but I would have no problem with California leaving the union (or with New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts going with it).
The United States of America is a nation for free individuals, and not for folks who feel they need government heavily involved in their lives just to make it.

Go for it. When you are invaded by Mexico, don't come crawling back to the US for help. Oh, no more water from outside the state. Build your own Eco friendly de-salinization plants.
PS. You might have made a good argument but you blew it with the Ruthless Dictator bit.
P.P.S. Guys with the wood chipper will be there for you in the morning.

Wow this is the first time I have read this question. I posted similar things a couple times. I personally agree wholeheartedly. I think Cali. should have to pay for the water they get from other states, pay for the electricity they ship in and by treaty at fair rates. Rather than by force in the House of Representatives. Cali has sanctuary cities, smokes dope they have a total lack of regard for the laws from Washington DC.

Yeah, I think they should. They should put up a lectrified fence, dig a moat all the way around it, pepper the moat with mines, to keep us Americans out and go for it on their own. The only thing is that they would have to pay us for the land at current market values. You can keep all the infrastructure for youselves.
