Actually me2, from CA & NY's history of results, my answer might be "yes" so I'm probably not the person you would want to ask the question to. :D

A constitutional amendment!
This is not going to happen!
But as I've said many times, I wish it would.
No disrespect to we2 or Teekno, but as I see it and know it you are wrong.
Doing away with the electoral college would make all votes equal!
Example: Florida 6 million voters = 6 million votes
Delaware 3million voters = 3 million votes
The idea here is not that the states elect the candidate, but that the people do!
If a state has a larger population then they will have more voters!
That is as it should be.
Every ones vote counts equally.
The popular vote is the only fair way because it reflects DIRECTLY the will of the voters!
If you know something I don't please share it with me!

1. Amendment of the Constitution.
2. The subsequent civil war, because smaller states would not tolerate losing what little sway they have with the electoral college.

You'd need to amend the constitution. It won't happen, because the smaller states won't let the large states get even more political power than they have.

The Electoral College is still doing exactly what it was designed to do -- mitigate the political power of large states.

Amendment to the constitution or constitutional convention both of which are pretty unlikely on this matter.
