What would you do, as a state, if an area in Mexico got independent and decided to call itself "Texas"? And then claimed that they are the rightful owners of US occupied Texas? Would you call it by that name? Would you feel there is an effort to usurp your country's history or worse, threaten you politically?

OK, if you have indeed stolen TExas it is a bad example, lol. But my point is that this is exactly what is happening with the Former Yugoslav Republic of "Macedonia", which is usurping the name of the authentic (since the Antiquity) Greek Macedonia, and many countries -including USA - are trying to force Greece to accept this by recognising the pseudo -MAcedonia by this name.

NO, I would NOT call an area in Mexico by the name "Texas", because there is only one Texas. It is located in the United States. And I would not call any area "Macedonia" except for the one, true, authentic Makedonia which is located in Northern Greece. Makedonia is, was and always will be Greek, despite the efforts of those who want to distort history.

yes, usa/europeans stole texas as you point out from not only the "mexicans" but also from native americans.....& this is one more example of how -- over the course of time-- borders & cultures change. (there is a faction of mexico that still dreams of taking back texas/california).

this situation does not upsurp history as history continually evolves & whomever is in power writes the history.

in the case of macedonia, i wouldn't be as concerned about a name change as a political takeover.....well, in the end the people will decide....this has been going on in your part of the world "forever".....& i don't see it ever changing...the best you can hope for is a government that promotes peace!!

If they do it in Mexico it would not pertain to the USA. Mexico would have to deal with it and would probably have our support.

As for calling it Texas, why not? We have Paris, IL and Paris TX. Cleveland, OH and Cleavland, MS

Doesn't matter. If the politicians have their way there will be no border soon anyway. See the Dream Act, NUA, Amnesty Bill . . .

well, technically, Texas used to be part of Mexico before we stole it from them...I think I would call them whatever they want as long as they keep George Bush and his family in that country and not in ours!

My dear, wrong place to ask (for a variety of reasons).
You'd better ask Europeans. French, German, Spanish, Italians:
What if Austria or Slovenia named a neighbouring to Italy province "Veneto" ?
