I'm considering installing a cold air intake system on my 02 Ford Focus w/ 2.0 sohc. I'm just trying to give this whimpy a-- engine a little more "umph", and maybe a bit better mpg. Is this conceivably possible with a short intake system, or a waste of $?

With short "cold air intake" systems, you are actually creating a "hot" intake system. Air is heated by the rad and engine before getting to the manifold. This is bad. Cold air systems must get their air from the front of the car before the rad to have any effect. On a Focus, I don't think anything short of a turbo or supercharger will have any effect.

Most likely is a waste of money. The cost savings are little and no return of investment. But it will look cool when you open the hood.

The original Air Box Intake it was designed to take a wide range of conditions. If you look carefully it leads outside of the car, therefore you are getting cold air. The manifold is hot! So the air expand therefore you have accomplished nothing. Also those air boxes had baffles to keep the filter dry (a wet filter does not allows air well). Some they have places where heavy dirt particles gets deposit way from the filter so during heavy dust conditions it does not gets clogged easier.

People do not give enough credit to OEM equipment. A lot of thought has been put on it.

Seem that people does not know how is to drive a late 1970's to 1980's car. My Prelude had 96 HPs now a Civic is about 210 or more, a Civic (aka CVCC) was like 80 some horses. We would killed for a 30 MPG 210 HP engine. Most of the cars right now are all tapped out as far engine performance with the ease to drive and the fuel economy. Beyond that, you need some serious $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to make go faster. On a 210 HP engine 5 HP does not even make a dent (less than 10%). On a 96 HP that is about a 20% improvement, and a header with other 10% more you got 115 and a change... that made some difference on that time.

It'll give you a couple of HP but not much. You will probably notice a slight difference. I wouldn't call it a waste of money.

it will help some just slightly better air flow, but not much and it might make more under hood noise... don't blow over 40 bucks on this mod in my book
