My last rant on this subject.

The Lancet has published facts that boys aged 15 - 17 are commiting suicide at a rate 18 times higher when they are incarcerated in Young Offenders Institutes in the UK.

Attempts at suicide are now at 45% higher than on the outside.

Girls of the same age (15 - 17) are at 22% higher suicide rate, whilst self harming is now at a rate of 67% higher than those on the outside.

Bullying by staff and fellow inmates, drugs, and low self esteem are quoted as the main reasons.

I have one question only - Who is watching the watchers?

Comments please.

Just curious to know if you work in corrections? These are horrible statistics. Something needs to be done for sure. Although I believe strongly in being punished accordingly for your crimes I wish so badly that there was some way or somehow they can figure out to actually rehabilitate these young ones so hopefully they will not doing something worse when they become adults.

While these statistics, if true, are certainly cause for inquiry, remember that comparing the rates of incarcerated teens to "teens on the outside" is a bit of a statistical problem. There can be MANY differences in characteristics of these two populations beyond the mere fact of incarceration. The necessary comparison would be to an experimentally matched group of OFFENDERS with similar socio-economic backgrounds, etc. who are NOT incarcerated. Still, a question worth looking into.

As usual with Lancet studies, it seems as though they try to pass off correllation with causation. The mere fact that the teens managed to behave in a fashion that resulted in their incarceration is probably a good indicator that they were already having problems. Their time spent in Institutes probably had little or no effect on their suicidal predilictions.

How horrible, in America we just get the media to do an expose on the subject. Try to get that don't there, I hope it works. My heart goes out to anyone thinking about suicide, especially young people.

google Zahid Mubarek, you may find the story interesting, he was killed by his racist cell mate a day prior to his release from custody, allegations against prison staff included setting up 'gladiator style fights' between inmates.

His full enquiry is on the net and makes for very sad reading.

Google also Kevin Henson - though you may remember some years ago this story was dramatised by the BBC with Tamsin Outhwaite playing his mother.

Only the Lord changes hearts and minds. These young people need to know the Lord Jesus. They need to be standing for the Lord instead of drugs, violent games, alcohol and sex parties. There is fear in suicide. These young people fear life every day they live. "Perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment." The Lord is "Perfect Love."
