For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!
Download here:

BTW, Avoid the free version of an anti-virus called AVG, it is wildly popular, but it has horrible virus detection capibilities. OOPS, you have already found out that AVG is crap!
Enjoy!

I'm surprised to hear your system won't let you update AVG. It's by far the best product out there. Check what version you're using. If it starts with 7.4.... or lower, you won't be able to upgrade. You'd probably do better to use the add/remove programs box on control panel to uninstall it completely, then download the software again, and reinstall it.

Loads out there, but if you like AVG I'd sort that one out. It's possible the version you have is outdated. 7.5 is the current freebie. Just uninstall your current one and download the new one from grisoft. Here's the link: http://free.grisoft.com/

I assume you have AVG 7.5 ...
Open AVG Control centre.
Update Manager -> Settings -> Advanced -> Delete Temp files.
Updates will then work.
All the best.
