It depends upon what part of the East Coast you are going to.
Leaves are just starting to turn in New Jersey where I am located so I would imagine New England - Maine, Massachusetts - might have some nice colors right now through mid-October. Then NJ/MD/VA might be October-Early November.

Northern New England meaning Maine,NH,Vt and upstate NY are all changing now. By Columbus Day weekend we should be at peak and then the colors will deteriorate rapidly. The general rule is the further north you are the sooner the leaves change.
