Ok I'll tell you the full truth:
No antivirus is the best.
People tend to say that the one they use for the moment is the best in the world... until they get infected.
the most common used free antiviruses are AVG and AVIRA and both work fine.
Remember that if a new virus attacks your computer none of the antiviruses will automatically discover it. Some scanners scan for heuristic code (code used mostly by viruses etc) but theres no way they can stop a non-reported new virus by default.
Be careful, try different antiviruses and use your own judgement.

Well you are dreaming if you believe one software program/package will do all of those things "the best".
For antivirus I'd recommend you get AVG Antivirus Free edition.
For spyware protection I'd recommend Spy Sweeper (it's not free and is $39.95 for the 1st year)
For adware/malware I'd recommend you get AdAware Free edition
Those are the programs I run and I haven't had any problems in 2 years. They protect very well, update themselves, and alert you quite conspicuously when they "suspect" something is harmful.
All of them are available through this site.
http://www.download.com
Just search on the software name and read the Publisher's Description, Editors Review, and the User Reviews. This will help you make your decisiions.
Also, search on software names other folks recommend to you as many/most of them will be at download.com also and you can read their review too.
Hope this helps.
