You can get pretty good looking ones at the pet stores - look in the cat toys. Better yet, get a nice big fake rat. Attach the rat to a string and pull it across the floor, having the rat end up out of sight below a dresser or under a box. It doesn't have to be very lifelike as the quick movement will tell them that a big furry critter just ran through here...and their fear will fill in the details.

Wal-Mart has some in the pet department, they are made for cats to chase. It might work.

but if you do buy one in a shop or make one it cant be too hard!
