If you like sports, the EA FIFA is nice.
If you like simulations Command and Conquer is another challenging game. Also if you like RPG games then Never Winter Nights.
There is a little violence in these games but nothing comparable to a first person shooting game.

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
A good non violent game is Alchemy. It's a slow version of Tetris. I think you can play it online for free.

If you are somewhat into RPG's, especially ones that look anime-ish and is easy to jump into, try an on-line game called Flyff (Fly for Fun). It's a free download, free to play (although there are items you can buy in cash shops) and it's alot of fun!
You create this little character and fight these silly-looking creatures and kill them for experience points to gain levels, earn money to buy stuff in shops (weapons and armor upgrades), and they drop items you can use including rare items you can't buy in shops.
Again, it's alot of fun, addicting and easy to learn. I was hooked on it for about a year straight....lol
