I think Atlantis was real, wether it had the huge riches is another story. I think that they could have sunk into the ocean...look at Venice, it's sinking every day.

And, if you've ever read the Illiad, there is a mention in there of the land the dissapeared, and historians beleive that it is talking about Atlantis

It is speculated that either it is a complete fabrication constructed to proof a point or that it was modeled after a society that existed neat that time (sorry brain block, can't remember if it was Plato or Aristotle that wrote about it).

A possible site is Thera where a volcano erupted and blew a large circular hole out of the island, this would make it appear that the city slid or fell into the sea. An earthquake or even unstable land/erosion could accomplish the same thing.

Atlantis and El Dorado both existed, but they were the victims of those who wrote of them in the highest kind of hyperbole.

On "fall" into the sea." Earthquakes, hurricanes and Volcanos have disappeared or caused subsidence of cities and whole islands under the sea. If Katrina had hit New Orleans in the seventeen hundreds, I don't doubt it would have completely disappeared.

Atlantis could of been really real because look a very powerful hurricane could of came and wipe the total island from the face of the earth. Look they just found the city of Troy years ago. So i say it could be real

I think an Atlantis-like place could have existed......just not to the extent that popular culture has thought it to be........

look at a map of the greek isles in the Aegean.......something must have happened long ago, an earthquake or something of a catastrophic magnitude hit that area

Honestly, if you watch stargate atlantis, and listen to the story very carefully, it coudl be possible that the story is true. Basically, the atlanteans were the first evolution of humans, and were super smart. Well, they went to war with a race, (that started it) and a few survivors came back to earth. So, the survivors started telling the second evolution of humans (who were basically humans as we know them today) the story of atlantis, (which is a city in another galaxy, with forcefield over it, they sunk it to escape the wraith) and through the years, it got twisted and now it's supposedly on earth, in the ocean.

Plato made it up. He was teaching by allegory, which was a common practice of his.
