We live in Texas where it gets pretty hot. We will be gone for 11+ hours during the day to come home and it's 83 degrees in the house. Wouldn't it take up more energy to cool the house back down?

You can get a timer for the outlet the AC is plugged into.Set it for a few hours before you will be home so it won't be sooo hot when you get home.

It definitely takes more time and energy to re-cool the house if you turn it off. Remember the AC has to cool everything in the house not just the air. If your system is central AC, set it a few degrees warmer during the day and then it won't be so taxing on your system to cool it down later.

being that ur in the top point of the duplex as long because of the fact the backside tenant retains his/her warmth on the pipes likely wont burst. Now directly to the 2nd component to your question the decrease the warmth vs shutting it thoroughly off relies upon on how properly insulated your place is. If its poorly insulated turning it off will keep funds because of the fact warmth will consistently get away and the grant will could paintings extra good and extra in many situations to maintain that warmth. in case your area is honestly insulate then turning it right down to declare 60-sixty 5 is wonderful. I lived in the two styles of places and tended to easily save it at sixty 5. helpful it value some funds extra yet i will domicile to a heat domicile. some human beings might declare thats chilly i be responsive to my lady roommate does yet I dont care she isnt paying the charges. in terms of utilities being extra or much less relies upon on how plenty you utilize vs previous tenants and how various a cost hike the appliance companies made. This final 365 days the cost on electrical energy in CT went up some thing like 50% so my electric powered invoice went from a typical a hundred and eighty to 380 a month.

11 hours gone.... turn it off if you like.. the evening should be getting cooler.... if the house is brick the brick will stay hot even if the air is on or off. It shouldn't take that long to cool down your house. good luck

I also live in Texas and never leave my AC on during the day.
I have a different outlook though. What if your AC motor overheated and started the unit/roof on fire? Who would be there to call the fire dept? I never have the AC on unless I'm there.

don't tunrn it completley off...just turn it up a bit (maybe 8-10 degrees) while you are gone...that way when you come home and need it cooled down it won't have to take tons of energy to do so...never turn it on and off it burns tons of energy

Ever heard of insulation ? Depends on how cool you want to cool down to , for how long, and if your air conditioner is an inverter type. If you are only going to run it for 1-2 hours then no.

It will save you 10-15% on your electric bill. But, the best thing to do is replace your thermostat with a programmable unit. It is easy to do and you will be comfortable and not have to mess with it. For more info check out the thermostat page at my source.

you should just adjust the thermostat. if you turn it completely off it's gonna have to work extra hard to cool your house.
