i just came back from the dr, and the nurse said i've lost half a pound and i have blood in my urine. she didn't seem concerned about the weight because i'm on a diabetic diet but asked me was i having pressure or pain because of the blood. they monitored the baby for about 45 mins & i've got to go back in the morning so they can do it again because her heart rate was over 190 for around 15-20 minutes. i had to go to the bathroom again and she said she was sending the urine sample to the hospital for a culture. what would be a reason for blood in my urine? i don't feel as if i have a urinary tract infection but every since she asked about pain & pressure i feel like i'm having "poking" pains in my lower stomach. maybe she just has me paranoid but i was hoping for some input from others with similar experiences....this is my first baby!

thanks

This sounds to me like a UTI. I've had 2 myself in the past year. It's common to have blood in your urine with an infection like this, as well as fever and sometimes pain or tenderness in the abdomen. With my UTI I had a generalized feeling of tenderness, almost bloating, in my lower abdomen. Then one day it started hurting very badly to urinate - but many women do not have difficulty urinating with a UTI. For me, that symptom only developed days later.

Since you are pregnant, any kind of infection or fever you are having can affect the fetus in that their heart rate might increase. This happened to me last week - I had a bacterial infection with fever for 2 days and the fetal heart rate was elevated. Just be sure to keep your fever down if you experience any.

If they put you on antibiotics for this, try taking acidopholus along with, as well as drinking cranberry juice throughout the day. These 2 measures always helped speed my recovery.

All the best to you

It's probably a urinary tract infection. Do you have a fever? Blood in the urine is a common symptom of a UTI, and not everyone has other obvious symptoms like painful urination. And the baby's heart rate increase could also be related to your (possible) infection. Usually when a mom has a fever or some kind of infection, we see a rise in the baby's heart rate.

Usually UTIs are not very serious, just take whatever antibiotics they prescribe to you, and keep drinking lots of fluids.

Don't worry, if they thought something might be really wrong, they would not have sent you home until they found out what is going on.
