Based on the stuff I have seen here, I would say about 60% of these people have some serious psych issues. The worst part is that they come here asking for other sick people to help them instead of seeking PROFESSIONAL help.

Great question! I would say more like 80%. I like the ones who are in serious legal problems, then ask, "Help, help, I need legal advice before I go and stand up in front of a judge" I can almost hear the words....."but your honour, I know my rights....I heard it straight from Yahoo!"

I don't think it is quite that bad, but yes, there are people who do need Professional help. Maybe they ask for help here because they can't afford it professionally due to finances or insurance matters, and they may find a temporary answer, encouragement or someone who has experience with what they are dealing with here to give them some peace of mind here on Yahoo Answers. Most people in all forums however are not Mentally ill, they just want someone's opinions on other issues such as food, movies, etiquite for common social situations, some are young and may not have an adult in their lives to talk to with problems and this acutally gives them an outlet and a way to get some sort of answer. No one in this world is perfect, we all have flaws, maybe you would be better to say "There but for the Grace of God go I" Mental Illness is not something that is a chosen illness, just like cancer, diabetes, obesity and alcoholism, these are all ILLNESSES!! Encouragement can be the best medicine for many, and if someone were to seek encouragement and get the answer that may help turn their life around, then this is where they should be. I salute Yahoo for having these topics to be freely discussed. You never know, maybe someday you could be hit with a "mental illness" such as depression, etc... you never know and again, it could be you asking for the same help here someday.

Who needs professional help. If you think of what the possible consequences of your actions would be that should be enough for you to rethink your options.

You're wrong about psych issues too. Oh sure..there are some real fruitcups here. The rest act on emotion. When you do that you assured of having stuff blow up in your face. I consider these types of people great sport. You're doomed to fail each and every time in life if you act on your first instinct.

People seem to forget the old saying 'Look before you leap'
Boy Voyage suckers....its a long way down.

It depends on what you consider a "serious" psych issue. Most of the issues they might have are probably not too serious and could be treated. And hey - advice on Yahoo Answers isn't $150 an hour!

I checked with a doctor friend of mine; he says that approximately 30% of americans suffer from one kind of mental illness or another. Thanks to the greed of the insurance industry and medical profession most of them go untreated and the problem gets worse. Not complaining, just stating known facts.

So why are you here?

And "mental illness" is too broad of term. I have depression that I manage with diet, excerise and meds. Depression is a "mental illness" so does that mean I shouldn't be here trying to help others?

If you feel this way then maybe you need to leave.

HArd to put a percentage but I think those people that you are referring to are suffering from a need for attention.

I agree for the most part. But I guess some of my answers at times seem sort of psycho because I usually have nothing to do at work, and I spend my time on YA to make the day go by quicker. Spending too much time on YA can make anyone crazy.

I follow only the "relationships" topics, but my impression is that mentally ill people are rare here.

Mental illness doesn't bother me as much as the long, oddly detailed questions with run on sentences. I can answer crazy. I can't even read the long run on posts.....
