Get real! As an employee of the law world and as a parent of a teenager, it's clear to me that you either have no children, no idea about this subject, or both. Do you know that more often than not, the parents of teens who habitually get into trouble with the law have been trying desperately to keep the child in line? And that when that fails, they try desperately to get the system to help them before something really bad happens? And that the system fails them 90% of the time?
Yeah, let's just go ahead and punish everyone. Let's give the parents a criminal record too, so that they have problems with obtaining future employment. Or, let's go ahead and make people pay thousands in fines, so that they can no longer afford their own rent or mortgage payment and put them on the street, where, guess what, we the taxpayers have an even bigger burden to bear. Uh-huh, yeah.
Sorry to get on my soapbox, but that's reality.

if we aren't supposed to punish the child for the sins of the parents then that should work in reverse as well
I believe that financial settlements are typically billed to the parent....is that payment enough?
Finally have you EVER tried to keep track of a 14-18 year old 24-7? I'm the strict mom at my girls school and to be sure it's not as easy as you think

If the minor caused damages that are recoverable by the victim, by means of a cash settlement, the parents are liable. As for criminal charges against the parents, the answer is no.

In my state, the parents of the juvenile delinquent get a Case Plan. That's punishment enough!

No, I don't. Question for you: do you have any children and if you do, are you able to watch them 24/7?
Edited: So you're NOT able to watch your kids 24/7 which means they do have the opportunity to do things of which you don't approve. Please note I didn't say they would; only that they have the opportunity.

Why stop it there? Why not the child's teachers? Uncles? Cousins? Friends? Let's blame everyone but the child!

No, they shouldn't. People can't be with their children 24/7. Also, just because your child hasn't been CAUGHT doing anything illegal doesn't mean that you shouldn't have your eye on him/her.

I think everyone should be punished. Even if they didn't do anything wrong. That way if they even think about doing something wrong they know they will get more punishing. Everyone should live in paralysing fear of social punishment. If they don't, we should punish them.
