You develop confidence and get to know yourself, the issues you stand for and the subjects at hand. Easier said then done but you got the have pride in yourself. Physical activities can actually help with that as well. Getting in a gym and getting in shape can help develop many forms of confidence. If you are trying to stand up for yourself in a fight, well it will help if you just dont back down and for you not to be afraid of getting punched. In this situation, it would help to learn how to fight one way or another. If all else fails, get big friends. Or do like Teddy Roosevelt said: "Speak softly and carry a big stick."

Believe in yourself and your own abilities. You are a worthwhile person, and you deserve respect. Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise, because they will if they are allowed to.
It sounds like perhaps someone is being bullied? Bully's are fundamentally weak, and they feel better about themselves when they are targeting someone who they think is weaker.
Bullies know who to target, and if you are not confident or self respecting then this does shine through. Change your mind about yourself and the rest will fall into place. You won't have to stand up for yourself, as you will get left alone. People know not to mess you with you.
Good luck.

Standing up for yourself has nothing to do with strength, unless you are talking about defending yourself in a fight. Standing up for yourself requires a voice and confidence, and sometimes balls!
Whatever happens, do not let the other person intimidate you. Sometimes just laughing something off or walking away truly is better. But if you feel the need to say something, don't sink to their level. A simple and witty comment will suffice in most situations.
If you are asking in regards to a physical fight, then size really doesn't matter. In middle school, I was short and didn't weigh much, but once I started to show people that I wasn't going to put up with their crap, they'd back off. NOW, don't go looking for trouble... because it will come back and bite you in the @r$e. BUT if trouble finds you first, it's okay to feel afraid inside, but don't let them see it! Confidence is key in almost everything in life!

Standing up for yourself doesnt mean you have to have the physical attributes. You can be small and still win a battle. Just act like nothing scares you and then people will see confidence and hopefully back down. if that doesnt work then dont start problems just ignore rude people.

It is hard, I never had high self esteem in school. I don't know what happened, one day i just woke up and said F U C K it! and started telling people off and just refused to be a door mat anymore. I think it has to come to a point where you just snap and refuse to be treated that way anymore. Don't worry about what other people are feeling, especially if they make YOU feel bad!

I would say that you have to decide that your worth being treated with respect and that if you don't demand it from people you won't get it. There's an old saying people can't walk over you if you don't lay down and let them. You are the only person who can decide that you're worth getting treated with respect and the more that you act like your worth respect the more that people treat you with respect. Some times you have to fake it until you can make it.

You don't have to be strong, I'm not, but no one messes with me! It doesn't always have to turn into a fight! Scare people! Put out the image of a person who no one wants to mess with! And, if someone gets in your face, cus them out! I hope I helped! Good Luck!
