Happiness is a choice, a long-standing state of mind, while pleasure lasts for only a short while, and may come upon you unexpectedly.

Pleasure is an innate pleasant response to stimuli of some sort.

Confusion about the difference between pleasure and happiness often exists because pleasure can promote happiness and happiness is a stimulus for pleasure.

Happiness is a state of mind that can be augmented by pleasure and can be diminished by pain and suffering. Some people can endure a great deal of suffering and remain happy.

Other things besides pleasure can augment happiness. -Accomplishments can augment happiness.
-Making contributions to family, friends and society can augment happiness.
-Association with and contributions to transcendentals can augment happiness.

Examples of Transcendentals are Truth, Beauty, Justice, Love and God.

The contrast between pleasure and happiness becomes more apparent when one realizes that striving to make contributions to for the good of others and to the transcendentals can involve sacrifice and suffering but the result can be a deep and abiding happiness and a sense of having lived a meaningful life.

The contrast between pleasure and happiness also becomes more apparent when one realizes that constant pleasure seeking can actually lead to much disappointment and unhappiness.

Pleasure is a sensation or a reaction to something else. Pleasure can be felt through intimacy, something you're doing or something that is happening. Happiness is a state of mind. It describes your contentment overall with your life, relationship, job, etc. Happiness tends to have more permanence than pleasure, as pleasure is simply what you are feeling at the time.
Hope this helps.

In society today far too much emphasis is placed on accumulation, with the more you have the more you are attitude. this practice is not only eating away at the core of society but the main cause of the demise of the environment. Parents unwittingly overfeed their children with a false sense of love, what they are in fact doing is killing them with kindness! Also due to the over demanding work ethics of today more & more parents more than ever are replacing love with presents and tell their children things like "go watch telly" "use the computer" & "google it!". When we court we buy the biggest diamonds, go to the most lavish restaurants. More/Bigger/Largest/King size/GiantMammothh all spells greed. Happiness is periods of time in when we become one with how we feel with our selves & our environment. It can also be a equated to a chemical & biological level as to the effects of the release of dopamine in the brain and how there are different buttons for different pleasures. Happiness, we spend our entire lives looking for it when in fact it is all around us with each new day, joy & laughter and sunshine, long walks good books and time well spent with those we Truly love. pleasure is an effect from the responce stimuli and it can be said that with the right conditioning we can learn to appreciate/enjoy just about anything. Love, just is!

Pleasure is momentary. To find pleasure is not to find happiness. People who are sad or depressed can experience pleasure for a short time. That's why they become addicted to drugs or alcohol or sex etc.

Happiness is a state of being. It's found within ourselves and is not dependent on tangible outside influences.

Pleasure can be of physical or mental in origin relating to the senses, whereas happiness is a state of being that can be fleeting or lasting over a long period of time, unrelated to any physical sense or sensation. This is a very good question, by the way.

Happiness is a state of mind that comes from within. You don't need any reason for it, or require any outside stimulation. Pleasure is usually a reaction to some kind of stimulation or situation.

Pleasure is a natural expression of happiness (which someone can give us and share with us). Joy is a spiritual expression of happiness, which God gives us to share with others. Joy transcends happiness, since happiness is associated with the natural man.

Pleasure is something you derive from something else--sex, chocolate, etc.

Happiness is an emotion and a state of being. It's internal and a mental thing more dependent on you than on the things around you.
