I was getting waiting on the elevator when I heard a woman talking on her cell in English. When she entered the area where I and a couple other people were standing waiting for the elevator, she immediately switched to Spanish. I'm like, "Nobody give's a damn about your conversation!"
Was I wrong to get annoyed. I mean, if she was talking in Spanish the whole time, it would have been different. No prob.
And no, I don't have anything against Spanish-speaking people for those who are about to assume such.

It could have been any language. The fact she felt the need to switch from English to another language was kind of rude. But, it was the end of the work day so maybe I was just in a pissy mood anyways.

Firefly-Good point. Yesterday at lunch, I had three people having three different conversations on their cells. I almost lost my mind.

Giles-I must confess...the English portion was "He didn't act like that when I first met him.." So, I guess I was a little nosy..hehe.

I myself have experienced something similar and I tried to analyze the reasons that made me annoyed: 1. I felt I was suspected to be an eaves dropper 2. I was frustrated I did not get the chance to listen in on their conversation (although it was never my conscious intention to listen in on them at that time). Think about it, maybe you share the same reasons for getting annoyed.

For one, the fact that you're trying to make him feel bad by crying should make you realize something. He's protecting himself by temporarily shutting down while you cry. Imagine for a moment that whenever he got upset with you, that he would stand very close to you (face to face) and screamed profanities at you (think of the coach fighting with the referee in baseball). Would that make you receptive to what he has to say? I'm sure it wouldn't, and you'd probably do something to protect yourself emotionally. When a woman cries to garner sympathy or guilt in a man, it can feel like this to us. Woman aren't this way so they often find it hard to understand men, but do some reading and you can learn how we're wired and it will make more sense to you. Research has shown that when a woman is emotional with a man (crying, pouting, whining, etc.) it puts a man under significant distress, so much so that men often shut down out of self-defense. When they shut down, their stress level eases (so it's good self-defense) and the woman's level of stress then rises. Books by Dr. John Gottman describe this in detail and would be a good starting point for you.

You are obviously too self centered. What if she had switched from Spanish to English? Would you think that now she wanted you to hear her conversation. Perhaps another person on the other end came on who didn't speak English. I think all Americans should be Bi- Tri- or multiple lingual. I enjoy hearing a person speak a foreign language - Perhaps you are envious that she is bi-lingual and you are not! Don't be annoyed! Life is too short for petty reactions!

As far as I am concerned people should not have public conversations if they don't want other people to hear them. This woman also made the assumption that you do not speak Spanish. I can see how you would be annoyed but it would just make me laugh!

I would hate anyone talking on a cell phone in any language on the elevator.
Who wants to be trapped in a box with a big mouth?I dislike anyone talking loudly on their phone in public, it is just rude.

it sounds like you are looknig for things to get offended over. I see no big deal at all. Nor do I see why her conversation was any of your business at all.
The fact that you had to mention it was Spanish (would French, German or Chinese be any better? worse?) implies that is an issue for you.

No, you weren't wrong.
I haven't got anything against Spanish speakers either, but to switch just so no one can hear you talk about trivial BS, its retarded.
They live in America they aught to use our damn language.

Since cell phones have become so very popular, people have forgotten their manners- if indeed they ever had them in the first place.
