That IS your period. The brown is just old blood, basically the blood took so long to leave your body that it turned brown.

Hon you are getting your period soon. Brown spotting is a sign that your period is comming. Be sure to always keep a pad and tampon in your purse or backpack. ALWAYS BE PREPARED! If you get your period in school and you dont have a pad or tampon, it can get really messy. Dont worry. If you need a cretain brand of tampons, I suggest tampax pearl. They are AWESOME! Here are some tampon tips
Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Some women prefer to place one leg on the toilet seat or tub, while others prefer to squat down. After you find a position that is most comfortable for you, hold the tampon with the fingers that you write with. Hold the middle of the tampon, at the spot where the smaller, inner tube inserts into the larger, outer tube. Make sure the string is visible and pointing away from your body.
With your other hand, open the labia (the folds of skin around the vaginal opening) and position the tampon in the vaginal opening.
Gently push the tampon into the opening, aiming for the small of your back. Stop when your fingers touch your body and the applicator, or outer tube, is completely inside the vagina.
Once the applicator or outer tube is inside of you, use your index finger to push the inner tube (the tube where the removal string is visible) through the outer tube. This pushes the tampon into the vagina.
Once the inner tube is all the way in, use your thumb and middle finger to remove the applicator or outer tube. the vaginal opening. Later, when you are ready to remove the tampon, hold the string and gently pull it downward until the entire tampon is out.

Sounds like you are beginning to have your period. Most of the time, periods will be in the range of 21 to 45 days apart.
It is different for every female. Sometimes teens are very irregular. It can last anywhere from 3 to 5 days. Talk with your doctor or a trusted family member.

I wouldn't be extremely worried, the exact same thing happened to me about 2 weeks before I got my actual period, and I started mine when I was about 9.
Let your mom or aunt, or female figure that you trust, know, and you might want to keep some pads with you, just in case it starts.
If your period doesn't start within a month or so, and you still have the discharge, talk to a doctor.

For a lot of women, they dont really get a first "Period" they experience the same thing you are. that brown discharge may be all that there was of you first period. dont worry, this is not uncommon. with time your body will figure out a cycle and you will get more regular.

I don't think we can really predict when it's going to happen. When I got mine, I didn't have any warning. I did get some serious cramps later that day, though. If you start to feel cramping in your lower abdomen, that's a good sign! If I were you, I would carry around some pads with me, just in case. (I was 11 years old and in white shorts when I started! I kept feeling like I had to pee or something and surprise! there it was!)

Sounds like you're growing up. Time to get mom's assistance or a friend's mom's assistance on feminine products and facts.
