I know baseball fans hate hypothetical questions, most responses end up ‘that won’t happen, so I don’t have to answer hypothetically’, but…

If George Steinbrenner felt that Derek Jeter really wanted to retire a Yankee, and told him that he would offer him a $3 million dollar a year for his remaining years, how many people actually believe that Jeter actually loves the Yankees that much to sign that contract.

I.e., Does Jeter play for the Yankees because he ‘loves being a Yankee’ or does it have to do with the $21 million they pay him every year.

And in advance, you can get as abusive or obnoxious as you want, I don't care.

Yankee fans and others. I am extremely impressed with your responses (all but one of course, Joba Jr. you are dreaming.).

I hereby pledge a week of answers that don't mention salary at all.

The one other thing that we non-NYers don't take into consideration when discussing salary issues is that, by far, it's more expensive to live in NYC than any other city with a ML Baseball team.

It doesn't make the difference between 10 mil and 20 mil, but I am sure it makes the difference between 17 mil and 20 mil (as a % of course)

Here is a hypothetical answer. With the elite players of the game making ten times that amount of money it would be an insult to Jeter if that occurred. Since his ability and his career numbers command much more in the market Jeter would be free to go anywhere he wants do to the lack of respect. This lack of respect would override any of Jeter's personal feelings about wanting to retire as a Yankee and he would take the first train out, which is exactly what you would do in the same situation.

What a joke! Jeter does NOT have loyalty. He's a Yankee because no other team is willing to overpay him more than the Yankees already do.

Ask Seattle who thought A-Rod was loyal - but as we all saw - money talks. Everyone has a price. Even a class-act like Jim Thome - who meant so much to Cleveland and did so much for the community - left.

It's a business, people! It's hard for us to understand that - as passionate as we are - but there is no loyalty. And the players know it works both ways. Guess what, Derek - it doesn't matter how much you love New York - if someone entices George enough... you're nothing more than yesterday's news in NY.

The only reason Jeter wouldn't stay is because one day he wants to become an owner of an MLB team and that would require the money. I think if that wasn't part of Jeter's future plans he would stay while taking a pay cut. Maybe not for as little as $3 million a year but definitely less than his current contract.

I'm impressed too that these answers aren't ridiculous

I think he loves being a Yankee enough to take a pay cut to stay in his later years but I do not think he would stay for that small of an amount, he still has to look at it as a business person and has to do what is best for "Derek Jeter, Inc" and playing for less than most relievers get is not what he would want to do. I think he would do anything within reason to help the Yankees put another banner up...if that included taking a pay cut when his contract is up then he would do it.

I think Jeter would leave, any normal human would, an 18 million dollor pay cut is more than anyone could handle, I am sure if you made a resonable offer say 12 mil a year for the remainder of his playing days he may take it.

15 more years!!!

Jeter could not care less about being a Yankee, but the opportunities playing in NY outside of baseball would make up for his reduction in salary. If the Dodgers dangled $34M and a movie contract before his eyes, how long do you think before he jumps at it? "Just out of the reach of the diving Jeter?!"

I think the money helps!!! However Jeter is the classiest of yankees and this is why he has been the face of the yankees! I dont think he could adjust to making 3 mil from is 21 mil but maybe he would do it for 10 mil a year!!

I don't like the Yankees, but if they paid me $21 million a year, I would love them too. Like some others have said though, its a job and if doesn't get paid what he's worth, he would leave for sure. I love the my job, but if someone paid me a lot more to do the same job, except in a different city with different co-workers, I would leave too.

i comprehend. This has been occurring for an rather long term. There are various reasons. The Atheists have their time table to objective to push Christianity out of each and every thing and attempt to positioned on down the saints interior the final days (Daniel 7:25). another excuse? all people is in here in basic terms to play video games---even some 0.5-hearted Christians are doing this---and that they are asking questions for the factor of cheating. They get extra IDs and ask on one identity and answer on the different. I in no way did this and don't intend to. it is amazingly cheating and retains the honest human beings from getting any credit. ok, yet another excuse is that all people is bored and merely style of going alongside with the chaos for relaxing you already know and that they are puzzled and scarcity purpose of their lives. So, i think of that especially plenty sums it up. (I quite have replied such assorted questions o.k. and yet in basic terms have 4% ideal solutions. I rechecked one and observed that the respond chosen grow to be actual stupid---they only got here approximately to agree or maybe it grow to be the identity cheating.)

Jeter has one of the best qualities a baseball player could have -- LOYALTY. He would sacrifice the money for the team. I guarentee he'd rather play for the Yankees while getting 3 mil a year than play for the D-Rays getting 12 mil a year. He's got enough money in his Piggy-Bank. He does a lot of commercials and is sponsored by a lot of companies so he will get money even if he doesn't get much in his contract. And 3 million isn't nothing. It's a decent amount. In the end he will take the team over the money.

EDIT: Hey Brett you keep dreaming with your hypothetical question. Keep your negative opinions to yourself.
