I had the same problem. Access your router administration screen. Change the IP address to -

10.10.10.1

power off the router and power it back up.

Although its easier if we know what your Internet type is, Cable or DSL and who the provider is, this should work for you.

First off, have you tried running the disk that comes with your router? Most all come with some form of automated setup program that will step you through the process. Doing this will analyze first the computer connected to the internet and then set the appropriate settings in the router so that you are able to access the internet after the installation finishes. Usually the entire process is only about 5-10 minutes with all the unplugging and plugging in of cables and cords.

Your modem and your router essentially have to have the same IP address since the router is being given that address by your ISP through your modem. The only address that you should be majorly concerned with is the LAN side IP, or the IP address range of your home network and not the WAN IP or ISP-given IP address for internet access.

Look at the documentation for your router. If its LinkSys, NetGear, Belkin, or D-Link the setups are quite easy to get through without any issues and then can be manually secured and altered afterwards by typing in the IP address of the router which is usually 192.168.x.1 where x can be 0, 1, or 2 depending on which brand you purchased. The user name and password are default ones and are listed in your user manuals.

If you have any issues, first try checking the online documentation and help for your router or e-mail me with the type of router, your ISP and your internet connection type and I can give you a list of instructions tailored for your installation.

You cabling sounds wrong.

Read The Friendly Manual (RTFM) for your router and follow the installation instructions and “How To's” to the letter.

Still Stuck?

Call the router manufacturer for tech support.
