Do they stay in year round or do you store them in the winter? If you store them, why?

She takes them off because she says snow and ice sticks to them and she too prefers the unhindered view of snow falling without the screens in the way. My windows are all double paned glass so I don't need to add storm windows.

When I was younger, we used to store the screens during the winter time. The only reason I can think of is because of the snow and ice and maybe wind. The screens might freeze and then break due to the wind moving them.

I live in the south, and we have never done this. Our current home is only 9 years old and so all of the windows are the double-paned type, so there isn't much reason to do so. The only reason that I can think of is in an older home with single-pane windows in a cold part of the country would need the screens to come down and the storm windows to go up to give you the insulative value of double-paned windows.

Great question, though.

I think it depends on where you live and what type of storm window you have. If it is a triple track, you can just pull down the other window. If it is not triple track and you live in an area that gets cold, ask yourself, how much you could save on heating if you have storm windows up.
If window screens are stored for the winter, be sure to mark each screen.

I don't know why anyone would remove window screens for the Winter. If a person doesn't have storm windows and has a colder winter, one would want the screens on to staple plastic sheeting onto. If mild Winter, one would want to have the protection the screens provide for the Winter the same as the other seasons. It woud be interesting to know why your friend wants to remove them.

I take the screens off and hang the storm windows instead. Makes sense to seal in the heat in the winter.

I push the screens up and pull the storm glass down. But I've never removed them.

My parents always did....only because if you're not going to have your windows open then you don't need the screens on, and you have a better view.

And, then it was easier to hose them out before putting them back on in the Spring.

I never take my screens off....I have nowhere to store them in the Winter!

Here in the Deep South we have winter for about two weeks; mosquitoes we have with us always, so the screens stay up.

I never heard of doing this but I am from the South. It really doesn't get *that* cold down here.
