Okay, here's the problem. I rent a storage unit, it's under MY name. Since it's pretty big, I have room for other stuff in there so I let people I know to use it as well. I let my inlaws put a BUNCH of stuff in there (took over half of the space and they only paid less than a 3rd of the rent) when they were forced to move. I also allowed a friend of mine to put 3 bags of stuff in there when he fell on hard times and his room mate got them kicked out. Then, my inlaws took all their stuff out once they got settled in a new place. My friend called and asked if he could get his stuff. I go to the storage unit, and his stuff isn't in there. I call my inlaws and they say they took it (it was all in waterproof offshore bags, so I KNOW it's his) because they thought it belonged to their son (my husband, who is currently deployed). They say they took it so the stuff (lots of software and other stuff) would not be in the heat. It's been 4 days now and they will not let..continued below

they will not let me go get the stuff. First they said they didn't want me to go get it because they wanted to "make sure" it did not belong to my husband, so they emailed him and asked him. He said to them, give her the damn bags! I was so mad.. did they think I'm trying to give my husband's stuff to some one else? WTF. So now, she keeps telling me I have to wait for her husband to feel better to dig the bags out because they have them boxed up among a bunch of other stuff. Now this is really starting to piss me off because first of all, it wasn't theirs to take, second of all, it was in MY storage unit, and 3rd of all, it belongs to some on else who is demanding their things back. I was considering having a police escort when I go over there and demand the bags. I'm thinking they lost it, took stuff out of it, or just being lazy. Either way, something needs to be done about it. I'm tired of my inlaws doing this kind of crap to me. They are always in our business!!

You need to get some new in-laws.

1st of all - Ask your friend who left his 3 bags and explain what is inside the bags ... and then call your nasty in laws to tell them that your friend's stuff includes this and that and really needs his stuff which thats the only stuff he has ...

If that doesnt work, go to your local police station and ask how you can get your stuff back from your in laws saying you were holding the stuff for your friend like you explained above ... and if there is a way you can go with a cop to pick it up ... Make sure they are home! ...

Be sure to ask questions with the local police if they can't help you ...

Hey, just a thought, do you have their keys to the house? Go sneak in and get them and get out ??

You've said enough here: Your hubby's parents took your friend's belongings thinking it was their Iraq deployed Army son's stuff. Your friends should have clearly marked their property so to prevent this accident from happening.

The best and diplomatic approach to this is to have hubby write or call mom and dad, asking they either return your friend's belongings to the storage unit or hand it to you so your friends can get it back; NO mention of possible police involvement need be forewarned to them.

Now, if mom and dad REFUSE to let go of your friend's belongings--THEN police need to be contacted. Your friends can give police any hard core proof they own the stuff and the police either will give mom and dad a chance to change their minds and voluntarily let go of the items or face a sticky arrest issue.

First I would ask if you could go over and get the stuff out of the boxes yourself. If the answer is no then I would ask your husband if he is okay with you approaching the police. If he is okay with that then go to them with your friend. If he is not okay with that then give your friend your in-laws contact information and let them work it out, through the police if necessary.

you are not a party to this. Your 'friend' needs to send a demand letter to the in-laws and give them three days to make the items available or if they do not return the items, sue them in small claims court for the value of the items.

EDITED TO ADD:
Aside from the idiots who told you to break the law, MY POINT (and yes I am an attorney) is that once the items left your storage unit you lost control over them. Therefore, the ONLY person with legal standing is the owner of the items.

You have no interest nor legal standing to do anything as you gave permission for the in-laws to be in the unit.

simple. call the police and tell them what happened. this is theft. they posess something that doesn't belong to them.

when the police go to check it out your in-laws will be forced to make a decision. either give the stuff back of go to jail.

case closed.

a sticky situation. this is a legal matter, but suing your inlaws is messy. if it was my stuff i would have already been pounding on their door. considering this as theft is iffy, but it's certainly a small claims case. this issue is between the inlaws and the friend, doesn't involve you, and that is good.

Since you didn't "continue" I will just say to explain the stuff is not their Sons and you need it back.
