I agree that sleeping pills are a bad idea, except as a true last resort.

A nice soothing cup of tea helps, especially chamomile or Valerian root. Or you could sit quietly and read a book for half an hour or so.

The chief thing is to get your body to relax so it can sleep. And try to keep a regular schedule so when it is time to sleep, you will be ready to.

Good luck!

You poor thing - not sleeping properly is awful and can ruin your quality of life. You are taking the right approach by trying to avoid sleeping tablets.

First, stick to a pattern, go to bed at say 11pm and dont get up until say 6 am depending on your routine. Try not to eat anything heavy after 6 pm. Avoid all caffeine, coffee, tea, red bull etc.. after 3pm at all costs. Try some nice paecefull music in your bed room (enya - that sort of thing). A hot bath before bed is great! Have you got any worries on your mind or are you feeling down?? Write your problems down and talk them through with somebody. A few drops of lavenda on your pillow is also good.

If all this fails, talk to your doctor, a short course of mild sleeping tablets (zopliclone 7.5mg for a week) wont hurt you and it may help return you to your normal rythum.

Good luck and sweet dreams!!

When I do exercise- go to the gym- I sleep so well. Try and introduce 30mins to an hour of intense exercise to your daily routine. You feel so much better. A long walk is a good way to start.

Also, try and get in to a sleeping routine. It's actually better if you go to bed early and wake early. Avoid stimulants late at night such as a heavy meal, alcohol, coffee or tea or watching films or reading. This keeps my mind awake. If you are hungry when you go to bed, this can keep you awake too. Warm milk or a piece of toast are good ways to help you to sleep.

Keep calm and quiet for an hour before you go to bed.
Run and nice warm bath. Relax. Empty your mind of anything. Just enjoy the warmth of the bath. After the bath, dry yourself. Get into something comfortable, dressing gown, or pyjamas. Make a drink of something like warm milk, cocoa, ovaltine, horlicks. Fruit juice is ok if you don't like milky things. Avoid tea, coffee, alcolhol. Don't watch TV. Get into a nice warm bed (in the winter). Relax and think of nothing. You can use earphones and listen to soft relaxing music from your cassette. Deep breathe.
Sleep well

I have the same problem and try to avoid prescription sleeping pills at all costs.
Try avoiding anything that stimulates you(physically or food wise-sugar/caffeine) a couple of hours before bed.
I have tried Advil PM liqu-gel capsules(only one is good for me) and I sleep like baby.I do this ONLY when I have tried everything else.Good luck! I know it gets frustrating!

i have had trouble sleeping too, but the technique i use is visualising and repeating the numbers 12345 over and over it usually takes just a few minutes to fall asleep, mind you it took a few night of practising this for it to work, good luck.
