How many people would say that Bill Wirtz is their hero?
Probably not a lot of Chicago Blackhawks fans.
Guess what? He passed away, after battling cancer:

However, apparently he was a huge philanthropist, and donated millions of dollars to charities and for amateur hockey.

This is probably the worst question I have ever asked. Lol. I'm stunned by the irony though. Am I the only one who had no idea he was close to passing away? Who owns the Chicago Blackhawks now?

Did anyone else read this article?

"Wirtz death is a Blackhawks blessing"
Where does this guy get off? Have some class, Wirtz isn't even in the ground yet and this bottom feeder is writing crap like this? Its just sports at the end of the day people. I understand some of the resentment towards "Dollar Bill" but there is a little thing called time and place. Apologizing to his family after writing something like that doesn't make it any better IMO.

Maybe I will write an article when this guy dies titled "Slover's Death is Sports Column Readers Gain" just so his family can read it in time for his funeral.

Erica........the team is owned by a family corporation run by the Wirtz family. The team is sort of a subsidiary. The corporation was started in the 1930s and owned the Chicago Stadium. In 1954, the team was in danger of being sold to a group in Los Angeles, so the corporation bought the Black Hawks, and the Saint Catherines Teepees. So, there will be no change in ownership, just a change in the President.

Peter Wirtz has been running the team for the last 10 years or so even though his father was president. Peter's not into hockey like his dad is, but the team is a cash cow for the corporation. The corporation has had many lean years in the past in which the team has made the difference between making or losing money

And yes most blackhawk fans did hate him because he apparently corrupted the blackhawks, but then again 2 sides to every story.

ADD: Yes Zamdriver i read that article. That is actually how i heard about his death. I completely agree with you too. It's ridculous.

He may have donated millions for charities but he set hockey back 50+ years in this city. He may be a great man and for that we feel saddened by his passing. We all feel bad for his family but speaking as a one time hockey fan I say good riddance to the owner of the Hawks.

The guy who owned the BlackHawks was the "Wirtz" owner in sports!

I didn't know he was ill either. I know he was really hated by alot of Hawk fans. I thought Al Davis would be the next sports owner to die, he just doesn't look well.

Oh well RIP anyway." May you get to heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead. "

I knew he had cancer, but didn't know he was close to passing away. I guess at the age of 77, with cancer, its all borrowed time.
I'll reserve the rest of my thoughts on Bill Wirtz for a more appropriate time.

I'm with Zam. You don't slag a guy on the day of his passing unless he was the second coming of Hitler.
