So-called "witchcraft" has been practiced since the beginning of time and can take very many forms. What went for medical care in some early cultures was considered to be "witchcraft" or "magic" in others (eg, lots of midwives and folk healers were killed in Medieval and Renaissance Europe as "witches"). Sometimes people use the word to define other people's superstitions or practices that they don't understand while they define their own as culture or religion (eg, early Christians were tortured because the Roman authorities thought they were magicians practicing black magic--not because they were just "mean" toward Christians.) Witchcraft is NOT synonymous with Wicca. Wicca is a neopagan religion; witchcraft is not a religion and is highly eclectic.
Improvised spells are used in witchcraft. The spell will be inspired and have a specific meaning and motive for the spellcaster (a real witch or magician doesn't get a spell from a book they bought from amazon.com or necessarily from someone in a group they are associated with--they are often self-initiated or else have been taught to develop their own spells and rites)
I don't know who you share your home with. Perhaps the pattern of burrs on the bed was arbitrary (something with burs on it got on the bed and stuck), perhaps it's someone's idea of being artistic, or perhaps someone is doing something strange.
I my experience, a person has to be open to a spell to have it have a significant effect.

Witchcraft(Black Magic) will attract to you a very bad Karma the next life. Witchcraft is earnest punished than suicide. It is against the Holy Spirit.
Magic(that can be White or Black, depending on what purpose you have, what instruments you use and how you make the prayer) is the manipulation of energies in nature.
Black Magic: Voodoo, Witchcraft, curses, Sorcery,....
White Magic: Shamanism, Teurgy, ...
White Magic uses: Normal cross, sanctified instruments, candle put in a normal position when lit, praying to Holy Spirit or Masters of Medicine, normal pentagram, etc.
Black Magic uses: all of the above but INVERTED.
Inverted Pentagram:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2b/Inverted_Pentagram_circumscribed.svg/2000px-Inverted_Pentagram_circumscribed.svg.png
Inverted cross: http://i1.cpcache.com/product_zoom/264652497/inverted_cross_dog_tshirt.jpg?height=250&width=250&padToSquare=true
Inverted candle:

Do not try something even if someone tells you it's white magic what he wants to teach you, because he might use black magic and trick you, it's risky. I am in an esoteric school and gained some experience that is why I know now what is good or bad.
yes, it's real; i know people that had attacks.

I'm Pagan. I use witchcraft, though not as it's usually defined. In practice, I find it to be more about psychology, focus, and effecting internal change. Nothing supernatural there.
As for burrs, well, it's in their nature to stick. There's nothing new about that. I wouldn't assume they had anything to do with magic, they had to get there somehow. I'd be more likely to assume someone wasn't careful enough and brought them home.
Edit: Well, if someone put them there, then it's safe to assume it's a prank or a joke.

I hate to disagree with my fellow witches on here, but I'm going to anyway. I disagree with the people who tell you that witchcraft only works against someone who will believe in it. A spell is a spell. If someone casts a spell against you. They are sending energy your way to fulfill their will. However, if you fully believe that they have the power to hurt/affect you, that will greatly amplify the effect it might have on your life. So, I wouldn't take the passive approach. Take a stand. First, decide that you will not let her affect you any more. Imagine putting up a wall that will block anything she sends your way. Decide that you don't need the ex in your life. Period. Google "uncrossing rituals" and "psychic mirror shields." These might help you. Good luck and Gods bless.

A spell is when someone tries to affect the will of the god, or Gods by an incantation and/or offering of appeal. A prayer is an appeal to God to get him to affect a change in something that is occuring on earth - a spell by any other name .......
Witchcraft or wiccacraft as it used to be known still has many followers today and I supect the numbers are increasing.
Witchcraft (a pagan religion) should not be confused with Satanism which is a Christian invention.

Can't say it is real, can't say it's not if you look way back into history and folklore.
But i sure as hell wouldn't mess with it.
You don't know what you're doing, so don't even try!
