Finally....someone has hit the nail on the head.
Yes, Kobe has issues off the court just like most others. But that cannot take away from what he does on the court. Other than making his teammates better, what can Kobe not do on the court? He can do everything else and he is gradually improving with bettering his teammates. Look at what happened with FIBA this summer, Kobe and Kidd helped elevate a team that played no defense and was one-dimensional on offense.
And for the record, Kobe did not run Shaq away from LA. The Buss family did. Shaq AND Kobe admitted that. Also, why is it that people cannot overlook the issues Kobe have off the court but can overlook the issues other stars have like Iverson's legal issues in the past, the fact that Shaq did cheat on his wife too (regardless of the fact that Kobe said anything, Video Vixen and yall know who I'm talking about dimed him out too), the fact that Kidd has been repeatedly accused of domestic violence, the fact that MJ had marital issues and gambling issues in the past, etc. The list can go on and on. But people continually talk about Kobe as the scum of the earth while they continue to uphold everybody else. Its unfair.

Kobe's a phenomenal player. He's had issues off court, he's had issues on the court, and some bad luck with timing. I think the best time to evaluate Kobe would be now, in his prime. People accuse him of being a ballhog ever since he was playing with Shaq, but I don't think that's fair because those were his first few years in the league, and I think that some players will take a while to develop. I mean, you're talking about a kid who hasn't played college ball. So if we now look at a more mature Kobe, who is he going to share the ball with? Lamar Odom seems like the only feasible choice and I definitely don't want him being a go-to scorer. Who's left? Luke Walton? Kwame Brown? Jordan Farmar? There aren't a whole lot of options.
Yeah, Kobe makes bad decisions, both on and off the court. He's not perfect, and I don't remember anyone asking him to be. He's an incredible player, who, contrary to popular belief, has no problems playing with all-stars (see FIBA), so I don't see any reason people should criticize him. They do simply because he's famous, and like anyone famous, they all have higher standards.

The simple truth is that he has to be good for people to hate him so much. Otherwise, why aren't we having this same discussions about Smush Parker or Jason Williams?
It's because they aren't as good on the court as Kobe. And no matter what the "haters" say, they recognize he's a threat and will try to tear him down through insults and criticisms that they don't say about other players.
Finally- Just for the record- Shaq and Kobe were coming up on extensions at the same time- All the while, Shaq was getting fatter, missing more games, and barking at Buss ON THE COURT to get paid. When decision time rolls around, do you keep the older, overweight, injury-prone, demanding center or the younger, athletic, competitive, demanding guard? It was the right thing for LA to support their future with Kobe. It's not his fault that Shaq DEMANDED to be traded.
P.S.- I'm a Laker fan and wouldn't mind if Kobe was traded after his demands this summer, but I'm smart enough to know that we'd never get his worth in return.

They do. Kobe can't be a leader or a great teammate. Everybody knows his talent. They just cant be a fan because he does so many wrong things as a player to his own team and organization. The Jordan compassions are ridiculous with any player. His shots are awesome. Its what he has done with his selfishness that destroys his image and sours people. If he humbled himself and had a Mr. Nice guy/role model attitude like Ray Allen and Lebron James he would get more respect. But he doesn't.

The people that talk about Kobe couldn't walk or chew gum never less try and pick up a basketball and play the game. He is not mj but dam close and look at the last mvp didn't get out the first round but his team was good and he's average (dirk). Don't hate Kobe for being what most people would love to be and that is a guy who wants to win.

Bryant is an incredible talent. No one questions that. But talent alone is not enough.
He has shown, again and again and again, that he is too selfish to play within the concept of a team. His refusal to defer to Shaq or to listen to coach Jackson broke apart a dynasty. (And of all the people to refuse to listen to: one, perhaps the most dominant center ever to play the game, and the other, the greatest coach ever to step on the court.) That is not the kind of player I want to root for. I don't care how talented you are---you should never put yourself above the other players on your team. No matter how great you are, you alone will never be good enough to take down 5 other guys who are working in unison. The sh#t he pulled this offseason, berating his teammates, coaches, and management, both in public and in private, was just another in a long line of examples of his lack of character. And that's not even mentioning the fact that he raped a woman and/or cheated on his wife.
No, it is no coincidence that Bryant hasn't won jack since Shaq left, and I'm tired of hearing him whine about the lack of talent around him, instead of building that talent up. He already had the most talented team in the league around him and he tore it apart because his ego couldn't hack it.
He is the complete opposite of guys like Steve Nash and Tim Duncan, Magic Johnson and Bill Russell---great players who understood that their play was not enough. No matter how well they play(ed), it's still only a fraction of the team, and in order to win most effectively, you need everyone on the court involved and confident---not berated and ignored.
No, Kobe is no hero.
He's still got a lot of growing up to do---and a lot of atonement to do in the meantime.

Yeah he carries his "troops" to the first round and gets massacred. He is very overrated here on Yahoo! Answers. He really is a good player but he is in no way as elite as some people make him up to be.

Kobe is a truly GREAT player! That is true, he has a few publicity problems before we can call him a hero again though. Just have to understand, we're in America. Perception means a whole lot to us. Plus, he is in a huge market, where everything is blown way out of proportion.

Great team players make there team better, all Kobe did was tear a dynasty apart. He ran off Shaq they could have won 2 or 3 mare titles had they not let Shaq go because Kobe wanted to be the man. Now that he is the man what have they done? NOTHING sometimes it is better to be a team player than a great player.
remember there is no I in team!!!!!
Great Individual player no hero
