NO! You never sing a song from the show you are auditioning for unless specifically asked to do so. You always sing a song in your vocal range that would be suited to the character for which you are auditioning for. It's very appropriate to sing something in the same style and possibly by the same composer as the show you're auditioning for so an ABBA song in this instance would be fine though in most cases a pop song is not recommended.
Also, do NOT sing a song from Wicked. In fact, you do not sing songs from shows currently on Broadway or on tour because the songs are generally overdone especially by amateurs who don't know any better. Those running the audition will be so sick of hearing those songs they're likely to tune you out. Your audition will be for naught. If you want to be one of 40 singing Popular or Defying Gravity, then by all means do it... you will be forgotten.
The reason you don't sing from the show you are auditioning for is because the director may have very specific ideas on how a particular song should be done and if you don't do it that specific way then you won't be cast. Why take the chance? Don't do a song from the show.

I know that you're getting alot of different answers here, but I've been doing musical theatre my ENTIRE life. Now in college, I'm in a constant auditioning mode and if there's one thing I learned it's that singing a song from the show WILL blow your chances.
Have you eve heard the song "Popular" from Wicked? If you havent, it's a great song. It's fun and energetic and people love singing it. Once I was the voice teacher for a show and I was there for auditions. The auditions were open and ran all day long, and in counting I heard the song 97 times out of 356 auditions. The show, Seussical the Musical, also had alot of fun songs. I don't think I heard anything besides "Popular" "Part of Your World" and "Amazing Mayze" from the entire day. And from that expirience I realize how boring it is to here the same song over and over again! I was dying to here something out of the box at the end of the day. Something that I hadnt heard. And I had heard pretty much every song from the show.
Our leading roles were all played by people who did out-of-the-box songs. "On My Way" from Violet, "Human Heart" from Once on This Island. "I Hate Men" "Into the West" and "Mountains" are all examples of the out of the box songs that I wanted to see.
People who sit through song after song so NOT want to hear the same song again and again! It ruins their impression of you, makes you fade into the background, and makes your whole audition crumble.
You may say that an abba song isnt commen, but if you're audition for Mamma Mia, then it will probably be the most popular song there. Make an impression!
Hope I helped. Good luck.

Sometimes an audition will request a song from the show. If it doesn't specify, I have always felt singing a song from another of the composer's shows. It shows that you can handle the style of the composer, and you are offering them a song that they may not have heard 37 times that day. For Mamma Mia, you should definitely sing an Abba song.

I'm a director and what I look for when casting is that you can relate to the character. I'd like for you to sing a song from another show which relates to some aspect of the character you are auditioning for. Something that shows insight.

Try to find a song that suits your range either from the showor owther source. I think this is acceptable. I suppose choosing and singing a song from the show shows that you have a knowledge of the musical songlist.
Hope this helps. Have a nice day.

No! Never never never! Find a song that is in the same style or by the same composer. Singing a song from a show limits you to one role -- the character who sings the song.

It would be the wise thing to do to sing a song from the play that you are doing. If you wish, it could be a good idea to sing a different song that relates to the musical of performance that you are doing. Good luck.
