Hello I have a question about trying to maintain privacy at work. I am using remote desktop from my work computer to my home computer and am using that to browse during downtimes.

Is this track-able via the network administrators at work?

Also at work we use AIM to communication between coworkers. If I have some personal conversations with my friends using that same account, can they track those?

I'm fairly familiar with computers and software applications, I just don't know what capabitlities network admins are given.

Thanks for you assistance.

I think "Z" answered this question, but basically, Remote Desktop will only allow them to see traffic going through that port, but will not provide details to the sites I visit?

That depends on many factors. Your network admins will be able to see what connections are being made, but if you Remote Desktop to your homePC to browse the Internet, they could tell that there is a connection to your homePC under port 3389 the determine that is Remote D, but not see what your browsing on your homePC.

The Network Admins have the abilty to examin every packet going in and out of their network, and with a bit of detective work determine what PC is sendout/receive certain packets. Weather they are looking specifically for your PC is another question.

What puts up red flags as a Network Admin is unusual activity. X bandwidth used from a user today, then 10X bandwidth form that same user the next day.

To answer your first question, yes the Remote Access is tracked by administrators.

The second AIM question.. can they track those? No not necessarily, but if the conversations are saved in your AIM program folder, the administrator would know where to look if he/she wanted to know.

Most admins are somewhat layed back of what people do at work because they know a lot of people just dont know what is considered safe and what is not. Perfect example, this is why you'll see every single school with a filter blocking Myspace, it isnt safe.

as for remote access, they can see traffic on port 3389 to your home IP but thats about it. they can't see what your doing on your PC unless they have a keylogger on your work PC.

As for AIM they do have the ability to if they have software such as keylogger or other monitoring software on your work PC. ALthough they probably aren't unless you've given them reason to monitor you in the past.

Most admins have the ability and right to know whats going in and out of their network and what their desktops are being used for.

"Z"s answer pretty well sums it up. Network administrators can tell that you have a RemoteDesktop session, but not what is actually occurring on your home PC. RemoteDesktop is a "light weight" view into your home PC. Now that said, RemoteDesktop does allow drive mapping and printer sharing. If you are transferring files between systems, they can track that.

For your AIM communication, this can be monitored through methods other already mentioned.

Potentially, I don't think RDP is encrypted. Also, if they are running any logging on your work computer and/or the network, they would see that as well
