If it's in the U.S., yes it is allowed as long as they are not placed in a locattion where a person has an expectation of privacy; such as a restroom or changing room.

A camera hidden to spy on you is only legal if it is justified. Is he looking for a thief or is he just looking for bad or lazy workers. If it is only on a whim and you think there is no justification then he is infringing your human rights. He must not keep a record of your activities on tape or disc. Speak to him and ask him out right if you are the subjects of a spy camera.

A hidden camera has many uses. In the workplace where there is a lot of pilfering it may be allowed. If it is causing intimidation i do not think it would be legal.

I don't know why the above answerer thinks it's unlawful.
It isn't. Certainly not in the UK.

Covert surveillance is not unlawful in the workplace, whether by camera, recording, or keyboard monitoring.

I've done hundreds of cases where the evidence was gathered covertly, no-one has ever suggested it's unlawful (unfair, certainly - but not unlawful).
