- WHY does it irritate you??

..."don't ask me why I say..."
That's all well and nice, answerers; but what if a person feels that when a parent is "proud," it's because the parent is not letting the child be their own separate person.
"...I just know I feel this way..."
For example, your aren't proud of some Joe-you-never-known getting good grades; cuz you don't "own" him.
"...I stand alone today."

Your question sounds so adolescent. Why would you be irritated by a positive reaction from your parents? Are you like many teens who strive to be oppositional and earn the ire, and disappointment of their parents?

You do something well, earn good grades, do well in a sport, earn an award for your art, music, science project and you would be irritatated when your parents rightfully express pride in your accomplishment?

You would prefer the opposite? Somtimes parents are never satisfied with their children's accomplishments.

Would you like your parents to berate you for getting an "A-" by saying you should have done better and gotten an "A+"?

You have more important things in life to irritate you than parents who love and care about you. Enjoy your accomplishments and if your parents express pride in what you acheive feel happy that you have parents who notice and care. Give your mom a hug, give your dad a friendly slap on the back.

Absolutely not! Parental pride is shown because they are "proud" of their offspring. Because the child has turned out, and is turning out and doing the things they would want them to do. Irritation on the part of the child, is lack of self-confidence and of course embarrassment. The child should merely quietly tell the parents this and ask them not to boast about "you" in front of others. Be glad that your parents are proud of you.

The only valid reason you could possibly have for being irritated that your parents are proud of you is that your parents are proud of you for being what they think you are when you're not that person; otherwise it doesn't make any sense to be irritated that your parents are proud of you.

Why would anyone be irritated that their parents are proud of them unless their purpose is to disappoint their parents. Anybody with any respect for their parents like it when their parents are proud of them.
