I know that they are the only ones who can help themselves...BUT...she has a 6 yr old son, is almost 40, has a habit of managing her time (even working hours) around pick up or eating of fast food, knows that she is at that 'age' where it is now more than detrimental for her life span...etc..etc..
There must be a way above and beyond all the above to prove that it is now not 'embarassement', but 'necessity for her life' that is paramount...The six year old son is starting to speak of his Mom's weight and how she looks different, but really, really loves her as she is so good about Mothering.....Help!!!!

I would offer her some literature that illustrates the dangers of excessive weight gain along with a book on salads and fruits. Comfort eating can be dangerous as the weight increases everyday and possibly the weight gain is the reasons she is over eating in the first place. If she is almost 40 she must once in a while feel nostalgia on how she looked in days past. I find that a little exercise does wonders and you start a little at a time. Short walks become longer walks and even longer walks yet. Before long she could be on a treadmill.
What she needs is encouragement and not admonishment. Think you can handle that?

Trust me, she knows she's fat, and she knows it's a problem. If there is a time problem, you could offer to do some shopping for her in order to make sure she has fresh fruits and veggies; and to bring a nutritious dinner once or twice a week. Even that I would say you should mention only ONCE, and let her know that the offer is open any time she'd like. Then the ball is in her court. I'm sure there are things she'd like to change about you, too, but you don't see her nagging you. Tread very lightly.
