i just came across this snippet of a story. frankly, i don't think this is news at all. i don't think the owners will actually make the nets bigger. even by a few inches.

here's my opinion ...

leave the nets alone. if you change anything, decrease pad sizes.
keep luongo. (although i wonder if he was exaggerating about leaving if they made the nets bigger)
don't worry about scoring. for now. give it a rest. but keep an eye an it.

I'm a traditionalist and one constant that the game has always had is a net that is 6x4 so I say enough changes already, leave it alone.
There was also talk last year of a "rounded net" that gives a few extra inches here and there, I think that is silly as well.

Keep equipment size to a minimum, for that matter, not just the goalies, but the skaters gladiator gear is getting crazy too.

The nets should stay the same as well as the equipment sizes. Goalies actually got better after the last equipment shrinkage. Being a goalie isn't about being crazy or the fat kid these days. NHL goalies are highly trained and they actually have position coaches to make them better. I'd rather see a low scoring game where the goalie makes great saves than see a bum in players equipment let in easy goals. If anyone has watched old hockey games the goals that are let in are ridiculous. This isn't basketball. Increase scoring chances and stop complaining that goalies can actually stop the puck which, last time I checked, is their job.

I'm pretty sure Luongo realizes they would be making everbody's net bigger, not just his. Probably realizes not playing if they make the nets bigger would be a very expensive decision just to make a point. And, may even realize his threat is not going to carry a great deal of weight. I think he's safe anyway. I doubt they will make the nets bigger.

Bigger nets = ridiculous. Smaller pads = goodbye Giguere.
Haha, just kidding. But seriously, I agree, leave it alone.

Roberto Luongo is GREAT for quotes, by the way.
He tells it like it is. Lol.

When asked about wearing a plastic throat-protector:
"I'm still pondering the idea," Luongo said of the shield. "I've got to see what's more important, getting hit in the neck once or twice a year or letting in a couple of goals where you can't find the puck in your feet."

After being run into by a teammate in practice:
"I was wondering what was going on,' said Luongo, who was able to chuckle about it after the fact. 'I thought maybe he took a page out of the Anaheim Ducks’ playbook."

I'd like to see bigger ice. Every other major international sport has a consistent size playing surface, its about time hockey did too. Even though I'm Canadian, I actually enjoy the games on the bigger (international or olympic) size ice more.

Give the players more room to skate and you will not only see more goals but more artistry and passing along the way.
