Loaded question.
Your first question should have been;
Is capitalism destroying the earth?
The answer that is not-so-obvious is: NO.
"Capitalism is a social system based on the recognition of individual rights, including property rights, in which all property is privately owned." - Ayn Rand
It is the only socio-political system in history which recognizes individual freedom. Therefore, it is the only system which can save the world from other systems which seek to destroy it (i.e., socialism, communism, fascism, etc.).

It is people that is the problem and Capitalism is responsible for keeping all these people alive. There are almost 7 billion people now, and people were doing substantial environmental damage when there were less than 300 million, mostly poor, and with no capitalism or industry. Europe was once covered with forests, northern Africa was the bread basket of Rome, and the salt marshes of Iraq was fertile farm land.

The American (USA) Capitalism is really a dictatorship of a few mega companies, with enough money to buy politicians through their lobbyists. A guy like M. Romney doesn't get a war chest of 350 million, without selling out, in case he is voted for. Bush had sold out to the military industry and big oil.
Next, the Mega companies are not productive, they can only survive, if they grow exponentially, which is not sustainable. So we get every couple of years a recession and in between uncontrolled growth, with companies tickling the consumer out of its money to the breaking point. CEO's, who hold the real power, couldn't care less, they make enough money in five years, to survive a drought in high end luxury.
The conclusion: Business only thinks in 6 month terms, clear cutting of all forests, farming until the soil is eroded, burning cheap coal without filters, building subdivisions and malls and paving over wet lands, destroying rivers and lakes, the abuse won't end, until its to late.

Get rich quick schemes in the capitalist business world, (buyouts, IPOs, conglomerates, acquisitions, mergers, and the stock market), do not actually work. Remaining solvent does not actually exist within false economics capitalism.
Profit existing in the capitalist business world, or millionaires existing within capitalism, is pathological deception committed by the 21 organizations spying on the population with plain clothes agents, (with covert fake names and fake backgrounds).
Actual economics is the persons paying the monthly business loan payments of companies voting at work in order to control the property they are paying for.
Capitalism is the psychology of imaginary parents, false economics, and the criminal deception of employees that are paying the bills (including the stocks and bonds, or shares) of companies.
Anti-democracy republicanism is the psychology of imaginary parents and false government.

Capitalism's premise is profit. The way to make more profit is to seek the cheapest sources of labor, raw materials and delivery. The combination of cheap labor in underdeveloped countries, including China (which is Communist, btw) and cheap shipping costs (volume goods delivered in massive tankers, reducing per unit costs to below manufacturing costs in America (for example), together with a still abundant supply of raw materials gotten by any means necessary (sluice mining, anyone?), make it easier to despoil the Earth and make iPods for the masses!

Supply and Demand:
The world wants more but there is few productivity to provide for the masses.
This results in overprofitting, taxation, and higher profit of margin for the CEO's and managers.
